What was wrong with Kay Bailey Hutchinson?
She's supremely more qualified than the beauty queen (runner-up). She has a long legislative history that conservatives can be proud of. She has great working relationships with politicians on both sides of the aisle. And, she guarantees victory in a state where trends show the race tightening up...a state with a shitload of electoral votes. She's also a woman who MAY have been able to get 2-5% of the Hillary voters (although I don't consider Murphy and her batshit insane klan to be actual Hillary voters)

Someone explain this one to me.

1. Sarah appeals to and energizes the fundie base.
KBH would not. She's (somewhat) pro-choice.

4. I believe she is pro-choice.
On MSNBC the other day, Bay Buchanan was saying that Hutchinson is a non-starter because of her position on choice.

8. I didn't know that.
I can't imagine THAT being a person's single voting issue. Just crazy.

6. It wasn't about qualifications
It was about looks and looks only.

7. Based on the Repukes' rationale, Hutchinson isn't qualified because
she doesn't have enough executive experience. She was only State Treasurer for 3 years. Not the 16 years of executive experience McSame says Palin has.

10. She hates McCain. Personal animosity.
She was never in the mix. She despises McCain. She sees him for the slimeball he truly is, and he doesn't appreciate it.

I guarantee you, all of us here at DU would be considered before Hutchison.

11. But McAncient chose the best-qualified person!
Right... If I were Hutchison I'd be pretty steamed right now. He wanted a female running mate to help capture some stray PUMAs, fine -- but WTF? There are a number of Republican women who are far more qualified than Miss Mooseburger. Besides KBH there's Olympia Snowe, even Condi Rice (yes; she's awful but you can't claim she lacks experience).

I think this will piss off a lot of women -- especially the PUMAs -- who repeatedly see the best deals going to the younger, better-looking women while the older and more qualified ones get left out. McAncient may have appeased the fundies a bit, but he's not going to win the votes of many women with this choice.

12. She and McSame can't stand each other. Simple as that...
In fact, MOST Senate Republicans can't stand McSame.

14. Well, other than the fact she uses her maiden and married names...
.... isn't as conservative of a pick in that she believes in enlarging stem cell research lines, and doesn't bring the oh-so-important "Executive Experience" to the ticket...

This might have something to do with it.

From OnTheIssues.org -- "Would have voted against war if current WMD info were known." (Oct 2006)

Palin hasn't advertised her opinions and has a son who enlisted, so she can wave the anti-Cindy Sheehan banner all day long and support an occupation lasting 100 years along with however many more wars there will be.

Palin is a blank slate who can invent herself to become whatever McCain wants her to be for the election. It's hard to do that when someone actually has experience.

15. She Said No

Or was never asked because she has something in common with most other Republican U.S. Senators: she can't stand John McCain.
