Kerry took a loss in tax shelter in 1984 to avoid political fallout
Edited on Tue Jan-06-04 01:56 PM by elad
Someone found this article and I thought I'd pass it along.

Kerry took a loss in tax shelter in 1984 to avoid political fallout

SNIP:

Democrats were pushing for tax reform in 1984, and Lieutenant Governor John F. Kerry, candidate for US Senate, had some ideas.

"You need a major overhaul of the tax structure," Kerry told a panel of reporters on a May 6 broadcast of WBZ-TV (Channel 4). "You need to close crazy loopholes that are non-productive."

Though he did not share it at the time, Kerry had recently learned a costly lesson about loopholes in the tax code.

SNIP:

------

Looks like Kerry today is attacking the old Kerry when he talks about corporate loop-holes.

1. What I see...
is that he took a $30,000 loss to avoid even the appearance of impropriety.

Oh, and get used to hearing "appearance of impropriety" over the next few days. Check out Drudge.

2. Did ya' actually read the article on Dean?
To quote it:

"It just fell through the cracks," said Ms. Costle, who has since left Vermont government and moved to Northern Virginia. "They tried to make a big deal out of it, but the truth is that the governor had nothing to do with that. The person who dropped the ball was me."

Nice try though.

3. Those were UNregulated at that time. Kerry did nothing wrong. In fact he
learned from what he discovered and was able to apply it to his investigations in BCCI and the international funding of terror organizations.

Reagan and Bush tried creating issues llike that, too and used the FBI to examine Kerry's every move and transaction but they came up with ZIP. Richard Mellon Scaife got nowhere, too.

What makes you think you have something here?

Or is this just to distract from Dean's recent dealings with the Koch brothers and his coziness with banks, insurance companies and big corporations throughout his governorship?

Hahah...the more you dig, the better Kerry looks. Keep digging. If you find anything Kerry did that was illegal or unethical give it to Scaife and the BFEE. They'll reward you mightily for coming through where their operatives failed for the last 30 years.

4. Kerry and Dean are so rich, they get ALL the tax breaks
Yeah, whatever. I honestly love to see Dean and Kerry go at it, the most personally odious of all the candidates. Have at it boys! Tear each other to shreds so we can have a normal American as President again (I can't believe I actually miss Clinton).

5. Dean Sold Bank Stock After Recieving Inside Story From Regulator
and the Banks stock went broke right afterwards...

Link is over in latest breaking news... few pages back.

I didn't post it here because it was more fun to post positive threads about Clark.

6. Re: Kerry took a loss...
He and his wife are worth 650-700 million dollars and Kerry took a $25,000 and $30,000 loss twenty years ago... following the advice of his accountant to get out?

I don' think we should tar and feather him just yet... looks like he changed his mind shortly thereafter... later in the story:

"As a senator, Kerry voted for the Tax Reform Act of 1986 that eliminated most tax shelters and the disparity in tax rates that produced the incentive to create them."

7. Kerry will always seek to do the right thing.
I really have to laugh at the ridiculous lengths some will go to attack him with something that ends up proving how ethical Kerry is on closer examination.

8. kind of like
when they attack him on throwing medals rather than how it was a protest of the vietnam war ? and usually it's the chickenhawks that attack him for it.

9. nope
He doesn't get "attacked for throwing away medals". He gets "attacked for throwing someone elses medals away.
I have to go find that article about how he reenacted the skirmish he was part of in viet nam so he could get it on video tape for furture political purposes.

11. That story was not true.
And why would you perpetuate those Nixon era planted stories when Nixon and Colson were on TAPE plotting to brand Kerry as a "phony"....why perpetuate it?

Are you THAT partisan against him? That's creepy.

15. He didn't reenact anything for political purposes.
The men in his unit always filmed where they were because their missions were always so dangerous they never knew when their time was up and they wanted their families to have some last contact.

The veteran ASKED Kerry to throw his medals for him. Kerry threw his ribbons. Why spin the story into a worse case scenario? Was Kerry being a "phony" when he uncovered BCCI, IranContra, and CIA drugrunning, too. When he was the first Senator to advocate for gays? To get voting rights returned to felons who served their time? Crafting the Kyoto Protocol with other world leaders? How far do you want to take it?

How bitterly partisan must one be to diminsh a man's service? Nixon had Colson and Segretti spreading stories about Kerry's phoniness in Vietnam. Dean has you. How nice.

17. They have over 30 years tailing Kerry.
They have planted every story they could and nothing stopped him.

The only thing BushInc. has left is to stop him in the primary by keeping Dean built up. Early seed money. Early headlines in 2003. Corporate press plane in June. Two national covers in July. Two national covers right before the primaries.
