Why didn't McCain pick a mayor?

I was out of touch all day and am just catching up. This Palin selection is just so bizarre.

What's in it for McCain? He is now sure that Alaska votes Republican and he makes the far right wing of the Republican party happy. He also destroys many of his arguments against Obama.

The little I've read so far of Palin's remarks are just unbelievable. Being commander of the Alaska National Guard prepares you for President?!

There are many mayors in the US with far more executive experience who are governing larger populations, are responsible for higher budgets and direct more police (commander of the city's armed forces) than you'll find in Palin's entire state. If anybody suggested the mayor of say Dallas, TX should be VP, they'd be the joke of the party.

Let it be noted that Alaska, for all of its conservatism, is essentially a welfare state with the population surviving on largess from oil drilling and the federal government.
