Reagan was an incumbent; Obama is facing an open race.
We had virtually no chance in '84, opposing a popular incumbent with is party in power only one term. This time the GOP would be hopeless if Obama similarly were an incumbent with this type of pro-Democratic generic trend. But in an open race the margins are slight.
