Look, I already know two people voting for McCain after today
Edited on Fri Aug-29-08 06:09 PM by dubeskin
They were swayed by Obama last night. They were going to give him serious thought. They've been Democrats their entire lives, and supported Hillary in the primary. When she dropped out, they were pretty bitter.

Honestly, I think from a logical stand point and looking at how well they may "jive" together, it was a stupid choice for McCain. But I definitely think that it will get more votes than we're all claiming right now.

They were also both women.

Just look at the last 8 years. How ANYONE could even consider a repuke is BEYOND my scope of understanding. Folks, we are in BIG trouble if this shitbag duo gets elected. We need to get EVERYONE on board. Youth, elderly, everyone.

WE HAVE TO WIN THIS. HAVE TO.

9. I cannot in good faith believe a progressive or even a moderate Dem Hillary supporter
would go for Palin. Tell your friends that if they must vote non-dem, the Greens have TWO women on the ticket and they are not anti-choice either. (And if they say they won't then I think that is the nail in the coffin on the question of how progressive they are.)

It's bad enough they are playing cut off my nose to spite my own face; but in this case they are cutting off the noses of all women. x(

20. Geez!!!
I was an avid Hillary supporter. I was excited at the possibility of having a woman. But, bottom line, the well-being of my family comes first and that is what determines my vote. And the well-being of my country.

I honestly don't understand how anyone can sacrifice their families and this country out of loyalty to Hillary or the need to have a vagina in the white house.

Sadly, there is rampant stupidity in this country.

46. That would be working class Catholic women
who are economic populists, often, but socially conservative. They swing back and forth between us and the Repugnants. They voted for Hillary in places like Pennsylvania and Ohio and helped her carry those states. McCain isn't counting on this pick to help him pick off progressive, socially liberal, prochoice women.

Do you know that while John Kerry carried single woman by a large margin in 2004, King George Bush II carried married women by a largish margin and married with children by an even larger margin. It's these women that McCain is going for. And he doesn't have to move huge majorities of these woman from our side to his. Probably shifting the numbers by, say, 10% would pay big dividends for him.

And, if they were, then all we have to do is have the most yard signs outside of their polling places on voting day. They seem to be easily swayed by recent information.

Excuse me for being flippant, but there's nothing else to do. The Obama campaign shouldn't spend time and energy trying to persuade people like that. It's a waste of good time and energy.

Palin is the exact opposite of Hillary Clinton - Radically anti-abortion, pro-gun, anti-labor, pro-creation science and the list goes on and on.

If the only criteria you are looking at is a lack of a Y chromosome you are not to be taken seriously.

51. Yeah but Hillary won a fair number of votes
in rural Appalachia where lots of people -- men and women -- hold at least some of those stands. They didn't vote for her on the basis of those social issues that you name. They voted for her because of her perceived economic populism. Same with many catholic working class whites.

For SOME of those constituencies being anti-abortion or at least not strongly prochoice is a plus. Not all voters who lean in favor of abortion are single issues voters. That's why Catholics form a large portion of the swing voters from election to election.

49. You are absurdly correct
But I definitely think that it will get more votes than we're all claiming right now.

Anyone who thinks McCain picking Palin was anything other than sheer brilliance is either fooling themself or a fool. This is a pro-life, pro-gun, conservative Alpha Female of the highest order. And the fact that she's cute as a button damn sure doesn't hurt.

All of those conservatives who were going to hold their stomachs and/or noses and vote for McCain in November will be running to the polls now. This quote from Free Republic sums up the sentiment nicely:

"I never thought I’d be saying this for a McCain campaign... but get your wallets out people. It’s as simple as that. This choice was made to put you on the bus. We are way past a token nod to the conservatives, he just jumped in with both feet." from - http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2070563/posts

The good thing is that Palin's glaring lack of experience will take much of the luster off of the "Is Obama experienced enough?" crowd. And I have no doubt that the Obama camp already has a detailed list of points to go after with Palin. But to deny that McCain's choice was anything other than a rare stroke of genius from a foolish, floundering campaign is just plain dishonest.
