What does the Palin pick mean for how McCain's team sees the race?

What does the Palin pick mean for how McCain's team sees the race?
Do they think their only chance is to peel off women who voted for Hillary and and are now leaning Obama?

Does it mean they don't think the VP is critical and an unknown is much better than the negatives Romney or Ridge or Lieberman would bring?

1. It certainly seems to be a hail mary pick.
From what I have seen so far, she can't help him in the long run.

2. It means he knows it's not looking good, at all.
He HAD to throw in a surprise - not that it'll do much. If he was doing well, he'd have picked Romney or someone well-known and experienced.

That's the ONLY reason she was picked.
