First, virtually everyone is acting like McCain has picked a complete unknown. Well, for the vast majority of the public, that's true. But Palin is well-known, and well-liked, among politically active conservatives. Keep in mind that up until his being named as Obama's running mate, a third of the public claimed not to have heard of Joe Biden and even after he was named, 3/4 of those polled didn't know enough about him to form an opinion. That's obviously not representative of politically active Democrats.

So what we have is a pick that appeals to the repub base and is unknown to most everyone else. The trick will be how she is perceived over the next several weeks as people get to know who she is, just as people are just now beginning to get a sense of who Biden is. If she becomes the butt of late night jokes based on her inexperience, then she could become a drag on the ticket among more "average" voters. Only time will tell.
