Why Palin doesn't scare me (x-posted from another thread)
Edited on Fri Aug-29-08 01:44 PM by GreenPartyVoter
1) I think more people vote for the first name on the ticket than the second. Usually, anyway. (I once voted for a ticket based on the First Lady.)

2) I also feel that Obama's ticket has far more charisma and personality and while that may be superficial, the Kennedy/Nixon TV debates made clear that this matters in American politics.

3) Additionally, I think Obama's platform and way of reaching out resonates with a lot of people, especially those in the "center." Moreover, there is always a backlash against the incumbent's party when they have governed poorly (or are even just perceived as having done so.)

4) Yes, this choice will shore up _some_ of the conservative evangelical vote, but not all. There are plenty of Southern Baptists, for example, who may well have a problem with a woman and/or Catholic (if actually she is one) being on the ticket. Either way, he is not adding any _new_ voters there. He is regaining possible lost voters.

5) Finally, looking at the demographics are there really more undecided, formerly apathetic, or outright disgruntled women who will flock to the GOP ticket than there are African Americans and other minorities who will come out to support Obama? (Unfortunately, with the voter rolls being purged and all the other election hijinks that go on we may not get to see the true number out in favor for Obama.)

1. She's gonna get the spin of a lifetime from dawn to dusk on teevee and radio.
Everyone will be fawning over her. The people who control the govt also control teevee.

3. Oh, there's never any question of that. The spin is always a major
problem. x(

5. That'll make the politically apathetic like her. Obama needs to somehow
counter the RW spin.

2. Another question
6) Are there THAT many Conservative Men that will vote for a woman? If Hillary couldn't convince our guys to go her way (generally left, liberal, progressive and not threatened by an intelligent woman in power) - then how the hell can someone who lacks Hillary's credentials gain the admiration of Republican Men (anti-women, anti-choice, anti equal pay, etc. etc.).?

4. Palin will have to throw women under the bus and espouse everything those
guys want to hear. No choice, no equal pay, no equal rights. She can't run on the women have to stay in the kitchen business, though.

8. If she isn't the mistake is mine. I've read several articles where Catholics praised her
and may have mistakenly assumed she was one.

12. Well, she wouldn't have to convert for them to praise her. I've seen
evangelicals work in interdenominational groups for the anti-choice cause before.

22. Her relative obscurity.
That she can't carry any states for him. That's she is, as proven today, a horrible, horrible speaker.

Frankly, they're dejected. I'm having a really hard time not laughing in their faces.

23. They haven't even come _close_ to feeling what we have felt for the
last 8 years. Rage, despair, frustration, depression..... I would pity them but for that.

11. Noone knows her
It's a very short election cycle left. McCain now has only 2 months to introduce his VP to an electorate of which 80 % have no clue who she is. In order to even try to get any pay off from her he has to waste time and money informing voters. He picked a little known governor, who hasn't been in office long, from a state which gets little publicity and not in an area of the target states of this election. No doubt some portion of the target audience McCain hopes to capture with this will enter the polls in Nov with no clue who this person is. To me it's an incredible waste of resources. He had many more well know VP choices within his party. In an election that is playing as a referendum on Obama, why waste resources on such a lightweight VP choice. This is now an instant drag on campaign resources for McCain. Particularly when you consider 1 event a day McCain needs a VP that is going to be very active.

Palin is not Catholic. For the record, Catholicism does not support creationism.

19. Thank you. I did find it odd that she would be Creationist literalist Catholic. I have
not run into any of those, myself.

Now Pentecostal, I can really understand that group because I married into a conservative charismatic evangelical family that is only a couple of denominational branches over from them.

20. Yes. Me, too!
My in-laws are all born-again evangelicals. I was raised Catholic (though I no longer consider myself one) and put in 16 years in Catholic schools including college theology classes, so I'm pretty clear on Catholic religious beliefs. Catholicism has no problem with the theory of evolution as it clearly recognizes the divide between faith and reason, and because it sees the Bible as the inspired word of God, not the literal word of God. Big difference there.
