5. This is a stretch...
George Romney was a fixture in Michigan in the 1960's and '70s. Mittens has been their in decades. Sort of like saying W could win Connecticut because that's where HIS father was from.

That said, the economy's bad in MI, the Democratic Governor's being blamed and folks like Kwame Fitzpatrick in Detroit don't help.

7. because his dad was governor how many decades ago?
i actually think Romney helps in the west because Mormons who might be hedging on McCain will want to vote for Romney, this helps in:

AZ
NV! (20% LDS, Vegas was 25% LDS not so long ago, probably isn't now)
CO
MT perhaps a small amount of help there

14. Yep, a couple other thoughts ...
either way, BO has to hold Michigan. But, it might make the going a little tougher in some of the western states BO is trying to poach.

The one thing I would say is, I have a hard time believing that you could count on one hand the number of mormons that aren't already going to pull a straight R lever. So, I don't think it FLIPS that many voters. I don't know what their normal turnout is, I would guess a little better than average, but if anything, it might push more of them to the polls.

17. yeah they pull the R lever (when they vote)
but McCain's history is well known among conservatives and they might stay home out west, but Romney might give them a reason to turn out and where the margin is 5 points or less might be critical.

8. I'm confident Michigan will be blue.
I think this whole "Romney brings us Michigan" meme is wishful thinking. He's not his dad,he left Michigan as soon as he could. When he was running in the primaries he bragged about saving some business he ran and it turned out he did it by laying off thousands of people(sorry that sounds a little cloudy,I don't remember the details)Granholm beat DeVos easily and he is more connected to Michigan than Romney ever was. Our economy is in such dire shape that it would be hard for me to imagine the prospect of more of the same appealing to anyone here.

9. Can Michigan win without Obama? The economy is dire, unemployment at 8.5
If the republicans pull a win there, I won't believe it.

10. Michigan has lost a TON of jobs in the auto related industries under Bush
I can't imagine that many people in Michigan are loving what's been happening the past 8 years.

Plus, the GOP will lose a lot of other voters due to Romney's Mormon beliefs. Their small little Kool-Aid addicted minds just can't grasp all of that!

12. Nobody remembers Romney in Michigan
I grew up in Michigan. I was born in '54, and I barely remember Romney, I was just a kid. Ask anybody 45 and younger about Romney, and you'll just get a "huh?"

My point is that if Romney gives McCain any lift at all in Michigan, it would be with the 60 plus, white crowd. Not exactly the demographic that McCain needs help with.

I just spent the last month in Michigan. Obama is going to take the state, not much doubt in my mind. Detroit (finally) understands that the future of the auto industry is electric, and Obama is talking about gov't aid to retool the industry. That's music to Michigan's ears. They need that. They don't give a crap about new drilling -- they need help now, not a penny or two off gas prices ten years from now.

13. Half my family is in Michigan...
There's a lot of affection and respect there for George Romney ~ but, in view of their economic situation, I can't see it overriding that issue. If they believe McCain can help them there, it's another story. Most of my relatives are Republicans.

16. Romney hasn't lived in Michigan for at least thirty years....
Most people my age can't remember his father, I'm fifty, what make anyone think Romney is relevant in Michigan....

Beside that, his actions in the Board Room are exactly the kind of actions that took out half of the manufacturing base in Michigan...

And guess what folks, anyone with half a brain and millions of dollars could put on a really good Olympics. Especially when it's the winter Olympics which are only about half in scope as the summer Olympics.

18. what ever happened to Lenor(sp) Romney?
I think she was the last Romney to run in Michigan and lost. Was that his Mom? I'm 60 and only remember "I was brain-washed in Veit Nam" Romney statement that ended his POS run.

19. Romney's father was governor...but that was 40 years ago.
With the economy the number one issue for Michigan voters in this election, I don't see McCain winning there.
