Did you people, who ganged up and kicked my ass about my criticisms of Biden's speech last night listen to Obama tonight? Did you hear the true perception of a human being, of a citizen of the world, of a statesman? I did. Did you hear him falling prey to fear, oversimplifications, and pressure? I didn't. Did you hear someone folding to the lowest political denominator of our times, the awful fear of the last eight years, and giving up his right, his entitlement, to suggest that there is another way? I didn't. Did you hear answers to my concern that Biden's extensive experience and institutional knowledge can be utilized in extraordinary ways that we can't begin to imagine? I did. I saw an invigoration of the real American dream, not the republican fantasy that I am entitled to a million dollars by the time I am 30, but only if fortunately born.

Did you hear nuanced statements about US international relations that put diplomacy above belligerence? Did you hear Obama implore you to place education, health care, and a country that values critical involvement in our government above partisanship? I heard those things. Hear hear!

Concern troll my ass. Give me a big IBTL, or whatever that was, and a picture of Maria from the Sound of Music on this one. And try to read my post and give constructive criticism the next time before forming a goon squad.

25. Thanks, all, Obama gave a great speech last night

I feel skin thickening as I type. And I agree, this post is more about me and my thin skin than it is about insightful comment or even praise for a wonderful speech. I also recognize the validity and necessity of vigilance in a place that, even to me with my 30 posts, has been a refuge from the storm of the last 8 years. To round out the "me" part of this post, a toxic combination of fear, ego, and not having a voice in government leads me sometimes by an invisible nose ring to stridency. I regret commenting on Biden's mother's advice to him, and I regret not prefacing my criticisms of his speech with analysis of all the good things he said. Hearing leaders talk about progressive ideas these days is fresh air for my musty soul.

Obama, again, spoke to all in terms understandable but not simplistic. He did not abandon nuance for expediency. I found David Brooks' struggle to criticize his speech afterwards to be highly entertaining.
