Bwaaahahaha! NBC News just announced that there may be a huge
distraction from the GOP Convention next week: Hurricane Gustav could be a huge threat to the US Gulf of Mexico coast, possibly on the order of Katrina. I wonder how that fundie minister feels about praying for rain to spoil Obama's big night?

21. "There just might be a God"...
In my call to my totally blue Dad tonight we were talking about that.

He's seen my struggle away from God since I was a kid. We don't talk religion though I think that for intensely personal reasons we have both struggled and lost a connection and belief in a God.

I said, "Did you read DU? See how the fundies prayed for rain at Invesco?"

(As an aside, how cool is it that I can talk about DU and fundies with my Dad?)

He said he had. I said, "And now there's Gustav. I think they got their rain, just not the rain they wanted. Hmm. Maybe there is a God."

With that he started laughing and said, "OK if you've found God then it's definitely time for me to go to dinner!"

95. I'm wondering how this will come across the news if it were to be a split screen?
One side the hurricane destruction, the other side the RNC on TV? Would people think, oh, look, those are the people who will take care of us after their party if we are hit with a natural disaster? Or will they think? Remember when they didn't take care of us? Or, will those people watching RNC really care at all?

7. I think that people are going to be
conventioned out after us. This has been great. Hopefully something of Katrina's magnitude would not only distract from the convention, but just reinforce the idea and show how Bush has left the Gulf Coast unprotected and vulnerable due to a failed cleanup effort.

107. It was, at most, a 3 when it got inland to New Orleans area.
It traveled over the lower tip of LA for a bit first, along the lower tip edge of LA. However, it hit that part quite heavily. And brought a huge storm surge to the MS/LA coast, which helped blow out the NO levees and destroyed much along the coastlines and inland since it's so flat.

27. You are right, and I don't wish this on any of us down on the Gulf
of Mexico. I may have to leave my home as well. And I have family in the FL panhandle that may have to leave. But there is such irony that repukes would wish bad weather upon the climax of the Democratic Convention, but a possible catastrophe could occur during theirs. Even if it doesn't hit anywhere, but fizzles out, it will be a distraction.

46. I really wouldn't laugh about this.
It will affect innocent people.

The ONLY plus that would come out of it is if the media were forced to split their coverage between the RNC and the hurricane and I bet the American people will be FAR more interested in the hurricane coverage.

Other than that, nothing good about it. I'm near the potential strike area, so I'm not laughing.

105. This comes up on weather boards I frequent every hurricane season
Edited on Thu Aug-28-08 02:50 AM by Oak2004
(as a survivor of a deadly major tornado in my youth, I have a lifelong interest in severe storms and emergency management).

And every season we end up hashing out the same resolution:

Storms threaten lives and property, and so emotions around storms run high, in every possible direction.

Some people know storms only at a distance and think of them as "cool" -- these are naive people, often young people, who don't understand the potential consequences. Someday, sadly, they'll learn, but since they've yet to understand, they can't be said to be wishing harm on anyone.

Others understand the tragic potential of storms (often through personal experience) yet who appreciate storms as the awesome force of nature that they are -- they, too, aren't wishing harm on anyone when some excitement creeps into their post, and the awe they feel in now way precludes them from empathy with those harmed by storms.

Still others respond to imminent tragedy with bravado and black humor and other seemingly inappropriate responses (including efforts to explain the storm as somehow just or deserved or otherwise fitting). It's how some people deal with fear of forces so beyond our control, and no matter what inappropriateness pops out in their posts, they're not genuinely wishing harm on anyone.

And on the other hand, people who do not truly believe that a storm can be wished at anyone or away from anyone react to the slightest hint of a whisper of a desire for a storm as if the poster has directly wished harm on themselves and their family. These people, too, are reacting out of fear.

Fortunately we're able to take a deep breath and climb above whatever emotional response a storm stirs in us, and remind ourselves of the basic facts: we humans have no power, whatsoever, to control storms. Only a very small number of people are deluded enough to think they or others can control storms, and they're wrong. And almost no one wants their fellow humans to come to harm. Keep these facts in mind, remember how frightening a storm is to others who know they or their loved ones may be fighting for their lives in hours or days, and let these two pillars inform your posts and your replies. Then, we'll all get through the insignificant flame war "storm" that threatens every time a real storm forms without wasting an ounce of the energy we'll need on genuine emergency preparedness and response.

86. Gustav is going to strengthen into a major hurricane
Let's just jump right into the thick of things. Gustav is going to strengthen into a major hurricane, and it will reach the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday. Before it reaches the Gulf, it is going to cause some pretty harsh weather through the Caribbean. During the next 72 hours, the center of the storm will be tracking close to Cuba, Jamaica, the Caymans and the northern Yucatan. All these places will experience high winds and heavy rain though none of them may be hit directly.

A stronger storm is a certainty. Wind shear, which commonly weakens tropical systems, is non-existent where the storm is gathering forces. In other words, there are no mid-latitude winds that would directly oppose the storm's circulation. Furthermore, Gustav will be tracking over the warm Caribbean which is a storehouse of energy. In the end, it is the heat extracted from the ocean that drives the powerful winds of a storm like this.

After Sunday, the track of the storm becomes increasingly uncertain, and landfall early next week could be anywhere between Brownsville, Texas, and Mobile, Ala.

A Gulf Coast city being pounded by a hurricane and suffering extreme trauma while McBush and the goon squad party it up in Minneapolis and give long-winded speeches...
I'm sorry but this doesn't play well on TV. A side shot of McCain talking while N.O. or HOU flood on national TV would be a major blow, especially after McCain's screeching in N.O. saying that he'd never let it happen again or some crap like that.
Yeah, and I'm da tooth fairy.

This won't really help the Obama camp, but it will drastically hurt the McCain camp. KKKArl Rove can't spin this, esp after double-downing on Offshore drilling. Guess which party was bragging about offshoring platforms surviving hurricanes? The GOP. And guess where the bulk of our platforms are? Off the coast of LA and TX. And did those platforms survive the blasting winds of Katrina and Rita? Nope- the GOP scumbags lied and said they did.

Obama was right folks; the GOP is stuck on stupid.
I won't ever forget this;

Voice: "Another hurricane is heading in the direction of New Orleans. Residents are getting ready to evacuate if necessary and everyone is praying that this time, the levees will not fail. Regardless, the Bush administration has promised to be ready for action and will send help immediately, if needed.

But, let's take a minute to reflect on what happened the last time a huge hurricane hit New Orleans, Katrina. Just 24 hours after that category 5 storm massacred NOLA, where were President George Bush and Presidential candidate John McCain? Sending immediate help? Responding to the desperate pleas of the thousands who were drowning, starving, homeless, etc.? Nope- they were enjoying birthday cake!

Ready on day one? For cake maybe- but certainly not to lead.".

a hurricane bearing down as the Republicans convened would be good foor their standings in the polls. People would be reminded of the lives saved and neighborhoods rebuilt, and want more of the same.

Gustav is a disaster for the Republicans because they made Katrina a disaster for the nation.
