Extraordinary. I wish my parents, in-laws, aunts and uncles - all white, all liberal - who would have loved this moment were still with us to see it

I do not have words adequate to describe this, but it's an extraordinary moment in history.

Edited to say a special thanks to jaysunb for sharing this moment with us here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=6776879&mesg_id=6776879

29. Amen
I'm old enough to have seen with my own eyes "Colored Only" and "Whites Only" in the deep South. And remember well the images of Selma on TV and the reports of Civil Rights workers killed.

This is a GREAT day for America.

15. Of course. But the historic import cannot be denied.
There is, after all, a history in this country that was shattered today.

Many struggled. And today, justice rolled down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.

6. Yeah, but Sean Hannity says the "democrat party" is the racist party.
Which explains why all serving members of congress that are African-American are democrats and the first AA to be nominated for president of a major party is a democrat.

10. I just told my 3 year old son
that he won't understand it until later...but someone who looks like him and his brother will be running for president and may win.

I wish my grandmother, who had a limited education and cleaned the houses of rich white families in Texas for the better part of her life, could be here.

Perhaps she is in spirit.

46. I loved your post. And just think, the first president he remembers
will be a man who looks like him. Wow. That is just SO powerful.

I'm in tears here, grateful to have seen it, been a part of it.

And this from a woman who grew up in Mississippi, being taught all kinds of racist things. I thank God that I was able to see through it as I got old enough to question things and got a good education and enough life experience to show me how evil racism is.

I'm proud that I taught my own sons about the evils of racism and I'm proud that we have volunteered together for Obama every step of the way.

Give your precious son a hug from me.

made her cry.

She didn't make it to the GE but she voted early.

Both my yellow-dog parents would be so excited by this--and my mixed race son will never know that it was once unthinkable.

23. It's a beautiful day to be alive.
A major barrier has been broken. And it's also evidence of the shrinking racial divide. Sure plenty of racists still exist, but we have definitely made progress, or this day would not have happened. I hope that the next 8 years will advance race relations in the US dramatically. I realize there will probably be backlash, but it has to be weathered to move forward.

The bicentennial of Lincoln's birth.

I live for that moment, and pray it will happen. I can't see President McCain doing the moment justice. At all.

But President Obama? Transcendent.
