2. Wow talk about a Rhodes to riches story!
She doesn't come from rags, but from lone Rhodes scholar to that would be awesome.

I'd actually start listening to daily briefings each and every day.

We need her on TV and radio, where she can reach more people.

12. I think that President Obama would benefit from a strong spokes person like Rachel. Lets
face it, those who would watch her on tv, or listen to her on the radio, are already half-way in her camp.

If she were the press secretary, and had 8 years of exposure to the general public, it makes a stronger case that when she was finished with her position, and went to TV or radio, she would have a stronger following.

Why would a person want to stay an "entertainer" or "news reader" or "talking head".....if they could serve a president and be so close to the pulse of policy.

It would be so cool for her.

8. She's more powerful hosting a cable news show for an hour per night.
I'm against making her a press secretary instead.

13. She has a Phd in Political History. She would be at the helm of policy and help craft the
message that comes from the White House.

It would be like saying that a person who was a architect, instead of of designing world class structures, be confined to designing big box shopping strips.

17. Press Secretaries typically don't shape policy
Edited on Wed Aug-27-08 07:38 PM by Hippo_Tron
In fact, they are often kept in the dark as much as possible so that they don't have too much information to actually give to the press.

Oh and it's a HUGE pay cut from her current job.

21. Press Sectretaries and/or Presidential Spokeperson's are the firing line representatives and
the first voice and face of policy.

They sit in on policy meetings and many times their opinions count.

It is not about the money, it is about serving the first President who isn't purely anglo saxon, and being a part of history.

16. It is the Olympics of her craft. She never set out to be a talking head. She is very young and
would have the rest of her life to "influence" the public....of course people would have to tune into her first before she could influence them....

Common everyday people pepper the boob tube, and she is better than that.

Being the White House spokesperson would be an honor for her and she would be a terrific and smart person to advance Obama's policies.

15. As is said above, we need her on TV
And in honesty Press Secretary is more about the behind the scenes stuff than the press briefings. Journalists don't actually expect to get more than the talking points out of the press briefings and so the Press Secretary's job is to determine how much the real scoop gets out.

Not that Rachel Maddow wouldn't be good at this but what I mean is that someone with her skills as a TV commentator aren't required for the job. Although they are nice, especially when you are playing the part on the West Wing.

20. She thinks well on her feet, has a deep knowledge of European history, is a Phd, and is
the perfect person to keep the press hounds at bay and control the message.

Everybody who serves President Obama will be the best of the best.

26. Right, she's overqualified
Dee Dee Myers and Joe Lockhart didn't even have advanced degrees as far as I know. Mike McCurry had a Masters Degree.

White House Press Secretary is an important position but its influence is extremely over-glorified by Hollywood. She would be great as a Counselor to the President focusing on a mix of communication and policy but Press Secretary would be a waste of her talent.
