1. Actually, the official name is Invesco Field at Mile High Stadium
Edited on Wed Aug-27-08 02:06 PM by PeterU
Mile High Stadium was the Bronco's old stadium. When they moved, they initially just wanted to call the new stadium Invesco Field. But the fans petitioned to call it Invesco Field at Mile High Stadium. So you can call it Mile High Stadium and be technically correct.

As for the Pepsi Center--I'd just call it the Denver Arena or something like that.

I too hate corporate sponsorships on stadiums--especially publicly built stadiums. If the company isn't paying me for mentioning their name, I don't want to say it. I wish the media would follow suit instead of giving the company free advertising.

Ugh. :puke:

6. That's why we call Invesco Mile HIgh Stadium - its original stadium name
before the original one was torn down. We all wanted to keep the name.

But nooo.. some corporate asshole had to buy the name...

And we call Pepsi Center the Can... I hate Pepsi myself, drink only Diet Coke.

If Pepsi is only served, then half Diet Pepsi and half Mugs Rootbeer.. just to cut the sweetness in half.

19. That's exactly why it is the named field
Pepsi is paying hundreds of millions for it to be named that because it is then free advertising.

32. I know that sounded kinda dumb didn't it?
I should have said that Pepsi or other corporations pay these "naming rights" so that their name appears everywhere when the venue is in use. TV visuals, refernces in writing and online, radio when talking about the XYZ Center. So no, not free. But all about branding.

One thing is that these centers are named because they have to sell the names to pay athletes to stay competitive. I know sounds dumb but true. Or they need to raise ticket prices.

33. yep.
Its easy to blame some "corporate asshole" for buying the naming rights, but the fact is that the naming rights were put up for sale because the owner of the stadium (which may be a private entity or it may be a municipality in other instances) saw it as a low cost/high yield revenue source that would defray other expenses.

23. It was far from free.
They paid megabucks for that naming right.

It's just the way things are now. Ads on school buses, ads on stadiums. $$$

5. I Rename Them

On my sports blog I have a whole Anti-Shillname Law.

If it's a person's name (Busch Stadium, Coors Field, Wrigley Field), it's fine. If it's a blatant corporate shillname, I just rename it and never use the shillname. Usually, new stadiums were named something nice before the shillname was slapped on, or they're replacements of stadiums with long-entrenched names, so those names work well in lieu of the shillnames. Examples: Candlestick Park in San Francisco. Astros Field in Houston (was briefly named this after the Enron scandal laughably got their name off the park.) Ravens Field at Camden Yards in Baltimore (fits nicely with Oriole Park at Camden Yards. And most relevantly to us this week, Mile High Stadium or New Mile High Stadium. For a while, the Denver Post called the stadium that, and perhaps still does.

8. There's an effort to informally rename AT&T Park in San Francisco Mays Field
After Willy Mays.

Much better than a ballpark that has been named after three different telecom companies in less than 10 years!

The corporate takeover of public names and supported by public bonds

We loved Mile High Stadium, the stadium fight was close
we had just gotten computer voting machines at the time.

In honor of the armies of corporate lobbyists invading our city this week.

That's probably the worst part when old buildings are replaced with new ones because nobody gives buildings original names anymore.

That's what I liked about Tiger Stadium. The hockey arena (Joe Louis Arena) in Detroit might be replaced soon and the new building will probably be called something like "Little Caesars Arena."
