Hillary Clinton delivers the goods. (Again.)
For the http://journals.democraticunderground.com/Skinner/254">second time this year, Hillary Clinton has delivered a high-profile, high-stakes speech on behalf of Barack Obama's presidential campaign. And for the second time she Nailed It.

Last night, she left no doubt -- she is going to do everything in her power to help elect the Obama/Biden ticket in November. And to the small number of her supporters who, until now, were not committed to supporting Barack Obama, she made a compelling argument: This election is not about the candidates. It's about the future of the country.

I want you to ask yourselves: Were you in this campaign just for me? Or were you in it for that young Marine and others like him? Were you in it for that mom struggling with cancer while raising her kids? Were you in it for that boy and his mom surviving on the minimum wage? Were you in it for all the people in this country who feel invisible?

Regardless of who you supported in the primary, the choice in the general election is clear. To any thinking person who actually cares about the future of this country, it's gotta be Barack Obama.

No way. No how. No McCain.

Do you smell it? It's everywhere. Even (of all places!) here on Democratic Underground. That's the sweet, sweet smell of Unity. We're going to win in November. And when we do, Hillary Clinton will deserve her share of the credit. She was awesome.

Oh, one more thing: The media needs to STFU.

108. This thinking is a problem in DU ....
Edited on Wed Aug-27-08 07:59 PM by Trajan
Think of this: I am a committed, lifelong Democrat ... I did not select a 'favorite' candidate during the primaries, because I didn't find this to be terribly important to me, because, in the end: We will absolutely NEED to be united as a party to win in November ... I was voting for the Democrat no matter which one emerged ....

We also ABSOLUTELY need to convince fencesitting 'undecideds' (How can they exist ???) to come to our side ...

Now: Who should hear the message of this convention ?

Me ?

or the 'Undecideds' ?

Ego should be a small consideration in moments like this : What 'I want' is to promote a party that will allow my family, modest and eager to succeed, and EVERYONE's family, the ABILITY to succeed by providing public education, with more help for COLLEGE tuition, to access WELL PAYING jobs with PENSIONS ... That has more to do with the community at large than me personally.

So .... I am utterly convinced to vote for Democrats, and have been for decades ...

Why should I be the focus of efforts to 'sell' the Democratic party ?

No .... I should not be the focus: the 'Undecideds' should be .... but I cannot change THEIR channel to CSPAN ...

So, since I cannot change THEIR channel, I would instead expect the MSM to STFU and LET THE MESSAGE THROUGH .... Not for my immediate sake or satisfaction, but for the sake of convincing 'Undecideds' to come to our side ....

Me changing the channel to CSPAN let's me avoid the obscuration, but it does nothing to make sure Mr. and Ms. 'Dont Know Yet' get's the message ....

9. Some woman on Morning Joe this morning made a good point
Rare I know...

She said Hillary did everything she could in that speech last night to make sure if this race is lost by Obama, that he does it himself and it can't be placed on her shoulders and I agree.

She did everything she could last night to tell her supporters that if you don't vote for Obama, which in a way is like voting for her, then they are letting the nation, their children and themselves down. Couldn't do much better without looking like a scolding mother.

117. I don't have cable; I just have broadcast
so I watch it on PBS. There's a little atrocious patter going on; and they keep their faces in front of the camera when there are speakers; but it's tolerable. Plus, I can put on the later feed and watch it all over again.

They have those two guys on who are supposed to present contrasting liberal / reichwing opinions. Actually, except for a few glaring errors, the reichwing guy is being a gentleman about most of it. I'll give him credit for that. It sure ain't like when I used to see it with Walter Cronkite or Huntley & Brinkley, though.

Last night, during a break, I flipped to another channel to see what they were doing. Katie Couric immediately flashed onto the screen. I did a quick "duck 'n' cover" and switched back to PBS. It was like quickly stepping back into a doorway when you see some undesirable coming down the street, and you want to avoid them.

125. You know...
I don't know if a "Scolding Mother" stance in her speech would have been all that much a negative. Someone has to put the harsh realities in stark terms for some folks, people who might be a little too taken with their own sense of personal importance and wonderfulness. A scolding mother might be what is needed for those folks. Something to snap their heads back a bit and give them some perspective. It is apparent that some have had their sense of self-importance over-inflated, most likely by all the media attention. I know from personal experience that such attention can be toxic and cloud one's judgement.

Sometimes a scolding is needed and who better than a mother to deliver one? Sen. Clinton has done one hell of a fine job with Chelsea and I am sure more than a few scoldings occurred along the way.

It is indeed grand...an unstoppable force that drive the neo-cons from power and destroy them once and for all. I'm already sharpening stakes to make sure they stay in their graves.

Together, we will bring this nation back to a nation of the people, by the people and for the people, the alternative is the destruction of all we hold dear to our hearts...the future for our children and the generations that follow.

But for the sake of unity, isn't it time to start locking some of the more C.R.E.E.P.y posts that only seek to continue the divisions here? Enough is enough - we need to take back this country, and the only way we can do that is to foster greater unity between Democrats, instead of just stirring hatred. Please think about it.

Hillary did everything she needed to do, and more, to unite the party.

Now can we PLEASE have an end to the Clinton-bashing messages here at DU?

Especially the vicious smears we still see pop up from time to time alleging the Clintons are homicidal. Those should mean an automatic TS in a Democratic forum. Even when they're cast as "jokes" (by people whose other posts show how much they truly hate the Clintons), they are not at all funny and don't belong here.

Posts like yours do nothing to help Barack Obama win in November. You point the finger at Hillary Clinton for "everything she and her surrogates have done to lower our chances of winning" and yet your own post here in this thread serves to lower our chances of winning.

The choice before you is simple: Do you want to win in November? Or do you want to re-fight the primaries forever?

32. Sorry, I was disappointed.
While she delivered a good pro-Democrat/anti-McCain speech, I kept waiting to hear her say "I was wrong" or "Since then I've learned...", but she never did.

I think she said the things expected of her to avoid criticism, I feel I never heard any "enthusiasm" for Obama. Proof of this: after the speech, I'm hearing people say her speech is "proof the wrong candidate got the nomination". We wouldn't still be hearing that if she has played up Obama's strengths more. :(

I think too many of us aren't looking at this without bias.

Let me tell you what the Republicans are going to do:

You're going to see a parade of vets across the stage talking about how were "winning" in Iraq and how "pulling out now would be a huge mistake".

You're going to hear Republicans talk about all the "experience" McCain has vs. Obama, and play up his military experience while noting how neither Obama nor Biden ever served in the military and shouldn't be making military policy.

By contrast, they're going to play up McCain's strengths. Show me where Hillary did that.

Republicans go for the jugular. We Democrats try to give "facts" and hope people agree.

As a Democrat tired of losing, Hillary is not the nominee, Obama is. But you couldn't tell from that speech. Hillary simply said "just enough" positive about Obama to avoid criticism. But the requisite *enthusiasm* for his Presidency just wasn't there IMHO.

62. I never parroted what the m$m said about her speech. I never supported her,
never was a Clinton fan, and watched in worry that she wouldn't deliver the goods. She did--but damn if within a minute of the conclusion DU had dozens of people saying the same thing: "She didn't say he had experience." She didn't say "Commander-in-Chief." "She didn't say "I was wrong."

Within SECONDS, dozens of people posting the same thing in much the same words. I don't call that an accident.

And here you are, saying much the same.

I was impressed with her speech. She slammed her "supporters" who weren't in it for the goal, she swore she would fight, she swore the goal was to end four more years of the same--and that's much of what it is.

And here you are, saying virtually the same thing half a dozen peole were saying within seconds last night. I don't have test messaging but I know how it works.

Coincidence? I think not.

She looked fantastic, she's got this goal as well as her own political goals in mind. I liked it.

She broke my windshield when I though she'd merely bunt.

64. Coincidence?
I'm not sure what "coincidence" you perceive, but I assure you, I'm not part of any "effort", nor do I "text message".

Hillary did a great job of giving PUMA's a reason to "vote Democrat", but few reasons to be enthusiastic about Obama.

Cite an example of where she talked up his assets?

offhand--but it's not your call to make, either.

She excited the crowd, she made me excited about her, and she declared she wanted Democrats to take the WH. I don't know how long you've been at DU but this place was in a serious internet war during the primaries between Obama supporters and HRC supporters. It was nasty and poisonous and I stayed away from it. Yesterday, all was mostly forgiven--that says a LOT.

For me, she far exceeded my expectations. So she missed you on one point. Fine. Tell me one point where she didn't support the goal?

I liked it--and I don't let the m$m tall me what to think of things, nor do I let people on this board.

You have an opinion, I challenged it and perhaps failed. Life'll go on and Obama/Biden will win the WH. And I've bookmarked this thread for posterity. See you November 5th when we celebrate.

Until then.

72. Let me quote you.
> She excited the crowd, she made me excited about her.

The object of speaking at the Convention isn't to excite you about the person speaking. It's to excite you about the candidate.

The fact you can't think of a quote right away where Hillary built-up Obama's credentials seems to make my point.

Why is this important? Because we don't want "PUMA"s staying home on election day, fuming over their beloved Hillary havingthe nomination "stolen" from her.

Now all is well except to those who don't know how vicious the rift had been.

She's clearly got the goal in mind--and it's scaring the republicans to death--as it should.

that while Hillary's speech was her own, the general thrust of it was part of an overall plan.

When you're planning a campaign, you don't just willy-nilly pick people to speak and have them speak about whatever. There is a strategy around messaging and content, and who will take on which roles.

There were 3 major jobs to do during this convention:
1. introduce Obama to the general electorate
2. unite the party behind Obama
3. attack McKeating

She had meetings with Obama at the end of the primaries and I have no doubt they discussed her speech within the context of the whole campaign and the context of the convention. She ran drafts of her speech by him and his staff up until the end.

It was not her place to "talk up Obama." That is for very specific other people to do, such as Michelle. Just as it was not Michelle's job to unite or attack, it was her job to testify to Obama's character and message of hope.

It also was not Hillary's (or anybody's) job to divert attention back to their primary battle, which is over. That would just give the rethugs and msm somethin' to talk about.

Her job was to get her supporters past the primaries once and for all, by making a clarion call for unity -- which she did. And her job was as attack dog on McKeating's policies -- which she also did.

I thought both her speech and delivery were fabulous and dead-on target. I supported her for prez, I supported her for veep, and I just as happily support Obama/Biden. Hillary will be fab in whatever job she ends up with. I'd love to see her replace Pelosi.

107. This is exactly right
This is what she NEEDED to do with her speech, and with the roll call of today she solidified it.

I find it very interesting that the obnoxious questions raised by the moronic talking heads of the MSM are the exact things people are spouting here - "maybe they nominated the wrong person", "she didn't apologize" (for what? for running a campaign geared to win?), "she didn't do this" "she didn't do that."

I wasn't a Hillary supporter in the primaries but I have always admired her and recognized her strengths. Time for us all to get on board and quit fighting the primaries ad nauseum.

She's still fanning the flames of dischord on Pacifica.... giving way too much air time to a PUMA who appears to me to be in a snit because the "rules are not being followed" and the PUMA isn't sure if she'll vote for Obama despite being a lifelong Democratic. How Goodman manages to dredge them up is amazing. Her reporter yesterday walked all over the convention collaring reps to try to get them to accept the premise that Biden is a war hawk and will not work to end the war. He failed, and it wasn't for the lack of trying.

110. THe Case of teh Speech that Didn't Bark in the Night
Edited on Wed Aug-27-08 08:08 PM by chicagoexpat
As political speeches go, it was average, IMHO; notable only because she could have thrown a bomb if she wanted to, but didn't

it wasn't a bad speech, but, gimme a break; no one will remember it a month from now.

They're still talking about Obama's keynote from 4 years ago, and Ted Kennedy's "Dream will Never Die" speech from 1980; and forget about the historical speeches -- Churchill's Iron Curtain speech; Humphrey's 1948 civil rights speech; JFK's "I am a Jelly Donut" speech; RFK's...

No offense, but her 10 minute toast to Obama doesn't come close to any of those

and, lest you think I'm simply a Clinton basher, I predict it should be no surprise (the media hacks nothwithstanding), that Hillary's speech won't come close to Bill Clinton's speech.

he's a master at speeches when he wants to be (his own keynote snoozer from 1988 notwithstanding)

hmmmm--- i like that word ... "notwithstanding"

119. I don't agree
I'm not the youngest guy. But I have a vision of myself, years from now, looking back over my life. And one of the pivotal points I'll see is this convention, this speech, and all the historical events that changed the course of our nation. That put us onto the right track, and brought our country back home again. That made me feel welcome in my country, instead of an unwelcome stranger. And Hillary's speech will have it's place in these events.

It's like when George Carlin told the Wyld Stallyns about the wonderful world they would help create . . . I know, it's silly, but . . .

129. So one average speech, and one decent speech,
So one average speech, and one decent speech, make you forget "triangulation" with the ceding of policy control to the right wing, and the Clinton moves that helped bring the Gingrich Republicans to a majority in the Hosue for the first time in 40 years?

And the absurdities Hillary and the Clinton Klan practiced in a campaign they should have gotten out of months before? The playing footsie with the "vast right wing conspiracy" and passing around the anti-Obama strategies (with documentation, footnotes, and outlines) so the Republican work was done half way for them?

Damn, those must have been good speeches! I guess I was listening to something else.

Or maybe I just remember better than you what the Clintons truly are -- guccii Democrats who value power, money, and personal success over any kind of ideals or commitment to progressive principles.

If they had their way, Howard Dean wouldn't be chair of the DNC, either, and there wouldn't be any party money spent in any states but the 5 states they'd think they need to notch a personal win -- leaving all other Democrats twisting in the wind.

for the electorate to concern themselves about silly old policies. Your presidential-election carnivals, shouldn't be such fun. They just encourage the kind of foolishness that's allowed the psychos of the right to take over. It reminds me of our horse-racing commentators here in the UK, who are told to make the finish of races sound ultra exciting; when the last thing propitious to clear analytical thinking is a cranking up of adrenaline rushes.

Parenthetically, it would have been nice if Hillary had been correct about her supporters, but it's an imperfect world, not least that of our corrupt politics and foolish political groupies.

128. Thanks. For too long people here have assumed the worst...
about the Clintons and the best about everyone else.

Reality is more complicated and more interesting.

The Clintons don't have horns.

Obama isn't a defenseless fawn in the woods.

Hillary Clinton is arrogant.

So's Obama. That's why he's running for prez at 47.
