This isn't a novel issue. The extent of the rift might be more significant this year, but it is nothing new.
I was a delegate for Kerry in 2004, and there were people there who didn't think he was a good candidate. Howard Dean had a private meeting with his delegate to strongly persuade them to officially back Kerry. Kucinich took the softer approach which lead to state Party officials strong-arming delegates. There were Kucinich delegates crying on the bus back to the hotel because they felt that they weren't doing the right thing for the country by backing Kerry.
There is nothing to extort and this isn't the goal. I think the Clinton supporters are just sad. (It certainly isn't racist-- that word shouldn't be thrown around in such a manner.) What does it hurt to give them a little pat on the back, if at the end it unifies the Party?
