THEY WORK. I hate to damage the image some people apparently have that most Americans are above this sort of shit, but the bottom line is that this type of thing resonates with a big chunk of the population. The "celebrity" ads are retarded, but they took a chunk out of Obama's poll numbers, and they got people talking. The purple band-aids were hideous, but again, they got people talking, and they turned Kerry's military service into a joke.
A good amount of Americans find this stuff funny, or at least a welcome diversion from the all-business atmosphere of a normal campaign. I've talked to Repub friends and Independent friends, and most of them criticize the Dems for not having any sense of humor whatsoever. We're seen by people as being the no-nonsense party who can't take a joke and sure as hell can't make one.
That's why I like the key idea so much. It does two very important things: It highlights McCondo's house problem in a very prominent way, and it shows that we can have fun at the other candidate's expense too. Could there be some backlash about this whole PTSD thing? Yeah, but I'm not worried. First off, the Repubs aren't going to want to portray their candidate as someone who can't handle the sound of jingling keys. Secondly, as long as the Dems make it clear that the imagery is specifically related to McSame's houses, then any Rethungs who call "PTSD" will appear like they're using that "Get out of Gaffe Free" POW card.
We need something to drive home the idea about McCain's houses to the average voter. And thousands of Dems jangling their keys at the mention of his name will do just that. Is it "stupid and petty"? Maybe, but the last 8 years have proven to us that stupid and petty works with the average voter. I hate to delude anyone's vision of America, but anyone who thinks that most Americans are "above" this sort of thing is deluding themselves. And anyone who thinks the Rethugs wouldn't do the EXACT same thing in this situation, likely to great political gain, didn't watch their convention last year.
