How many houses do you own = competency test.
Also, what kind of car do you drive.

Its the kind of question you could ask an alzheimer's patient to see if they know what is going on.

Thanks to Chris Matthews for pointing this out.

1. And you could add...

..."which one of your political beliefs is the same today as it was this time last week?" If the candidate...er, I mean the patient... either can't remember or can't name one, they shouldn't be allowed out unsupervised.

2. Of course it 's another (flunked) comptency test on McCain's behalf
why else is he using his "that's no way to treat a prisoner of war" defense?

3. I can't thank Chris for this -- I don't think he is right.
I heard him talk about this at length last night and maybe he is right.

Other possibilities:

Maybe the question really does relate to the fact that McCain is so fabulously wealthy that he doesn't know.

Maybe it relates to the fact that he was trying to weasel out of giving a straight answer - Mr. Straight Talk REFUSED to answer a simple question. He knew the answer - he just didn't want to answer.

Maybe it relates to the fact that he knows the real issue in this election is class status and the question made him so defensive that he blew his reply -- all he had to say was, "I've worked hard and I've been blessed" -- but he didn't, he got defensive.

6. It may not be right, but it's great to have it out there as a talking point to debate
"Is McCain losing his bearings?" Even if the answer is no, he's already screwed.

7. Its a check on a person's understanding of their own reality.
A decent answer would be that he has four residences he lives in.

The car thing is actually more of a problem if you ask me.

5. Sounds like a question to ask a football player after a big hit
to see if they have their mental wits about them.

9. 1 house,
if decrepit old mobile homes "count." I've got a mortgage, anyway, and the land is worth something.

1 toyota.

10. Here's another competency test
Ask McPow to answer a question without reference to being a POW, to being blessed, or to anything military. Nothing about god, nothing about being without a chair or table for five years. He can't do it. Just watch.

Another point. What do old people do that is a sure sign of Alzheimers. They recall moments from 40, 50, 60, 70 years ago, because, for some reason, that's the way the brain works. You can recall stuff that happened 3 or more generations ago, but you can't recall what you had for breakfast, or whether you had breakfast, or whether Pakistan borders Iraq (it doesn't).

Okay, let's put all that aside. Can you picture Biden or Obama or any other responsible adult running for president on something that happened 40 years ago. Think about this for a minute. It would have been like Nixon in 1968 running on a platform of shit that happened to him in 1928.

11. Its great that anytime you can't remember something, you say POW!
That would work really well on a final exam...NOT.
