McCain's NFL problem
Edited on Sun Aug-24-08 12:58 AM by GrizzlyMan
I was looking at the schedule for the Repug convention and they have a bit of an issue. On the night he is to make his acceptance speech, the NFL season opens with the Super Bowl champion NY Giants facing the Washington Redskins. The game will be nationally televised on NBC beginning at 7 p.m. EST.

For you non-sports fans, the opening of the NFL season is a huge deal. The league is wildly popular in this country (and abroad) meaning everyone from fantasy geeks to average joes are going to be watching this game. They won't be watching McCain's speech.

In no way do I think this is a game changer, but there is great potential for a lot of people, particularly in VA where the Redskins have a huge fan base, to choose not to watch the most important speech McCain will ever make. Let's hope the game is good (and a little long) and keeps people tuned in.

13. Bingo. Just what I was thinking.
They don't want people to actually watch this event. Getting the approved Fox News spin will be sufficient.

3. Yes, I heard that in the media as well
I think the ratings for the Republican Convention are going to be dismal anyway. The fact that I'm +15 (in South Korea) and will be working that week means I will see very little of it. Thank god I'm not working this week, I'm going to adjust my sleeping schedule to watch as much of the Democratic Convention as I can.

4. Actually, the game has been moved back to accomidate McCain
Normally the opening game starts at 8-830pm. The game, starting at 7, should be over by or shortly after 10, allowing NBC to show the speech. They planned it that way.

...built-in viewers, following on from the football. He does a rabble rousing McPOW speech and Bam! He's ahead by 10 points the next day.

37. I disagree, it won't work that way
More likely they'll turn off the TV and start getting ready to go to bed. If you're in a sports bar for this game, does anyone honestly think they'll turn the volume up so people can watch it? Not gonna happen. They'll switch the TV to ESPN.

The less coverage for McCain, the better. No one wants to be seen with booosh or chain-dog. Even smarmy Norm Coleperson doesnt want the cameras around. He has to attend because its in his state! I hope Franken sends lots n lotsa photographers!

8. Another mistake by the Republicans.
The Democrats picked the perfect timing. Roll out the VP as the Olympics are dying down then hold the convention before the official football kick-off.

Obama is in the correct pose. That's one way you hold a football. McCain looks like he's holding up a plaque.

Of course he doesn't know how to hold the football, because he was a POW 40 years ago, and that is a certifiable excuse for not knowing anything.

Promising there will be more wars

McCain is holding it just like he did in High School.

Don't pick on him because he learned to play before the forward pass.

Better check, there might be an heirloom watch in there too.

I'm not into football at all and even I can tell which one is holding the ball correctly. McCain looks like a waiter presenting a wine in a restaurant.

painful first half with starters against starters. I have a feeling most NFL watchers will tune out by half-time (although, I still have hope for my home team).

for him.

He can count on the news media clipping together the good parts to feed to us later.

They'll probably have an air force show unit fly over the stadium before the game, giving the announcers a chance to talk about McCain being shot down. Just a crazy hunch.

38. It's not just McCain
There's a Redskins game concurrent with Obama's speech, also. Here in the DC area, people are just combining the parties. Some little TV somewhere will have the score, and someone will probably be recording the game, and a few diehard fans will somehow have their ears split, or will watch the game and expect someone to give them the highlights of the speech later.

It IS causing some issues here, because some people were caught off guard. But most are handling it well.
