John Harwood says Biden's gaffes (you know they're coming) will help Obama
Edited on Sat Aug-23-08 08:52 AM by jefferson_dem
with the constituents he needs to appeal to. Biden says what many lunch-pail types are thinking. Take the "Indians and 7-11s" and the "Obama is clean and articulate" comments. They may not be politically correct but those attitudes and observations are fairly common out there. Joe lends credibility -- "middle class, straight-talking sensibility" -- to the ticket.

Harwood, on on Morning Joe. Sounds about right to me.

4. Even in this spun positive, you see the meme ...
I like the Biden pick, and ANY VP pick was going to have some negative meme attached to them.

THIS is the negative Biden meme - the media IS going to create a gaffe where none exists, then go off saying that picking Biden proves that BO is not ready to lead, because he was not able to find a VP who he could have control over.

THIS IS THE ATTACK THE Rs/MSM will run with on Biden.

BO HAS to run counter to that and take the tact of - I said all along I wanted an independant voice !!!

NOW, that gets him past the first pastorgate type thing the media will create from something Biden says, but the second, the media will just hammer BO about how he needs to be able to control his VP.

It is what it is. Like I said, WHOEVER the pick the media would find a way to beat him/her up.

15. On Morning Joe
a few are saying the 'cons probably will say they're both arrogant, think they're all important meme. So far that's the only one out there that caught my ear and gave me a bit of worry. Not that they are arrogant, but that the Repubs, if they can create that impression, could counteract Biden's blue collar appeal advantage.

16. I don't think Biden will be that much of a loose cannon
Unlike Clinton and McCain, I believe that Biden respects Obama, and understands what his role needs to be. While he may say the occasional outrageous things, I don't think that he will get off message too much.

2. Obama wants him to play bad cop/pit bull..
he needs a straight shooter and somebody who isn't afraid to go out there and piss people off. Dick Cheney's been doing it for eight years, so it's time we got in on the act.

6. But Biden does it with
a big, charming smile, as opposed to a snarl. Better visuals :-).

8. Biden can keep them very busy
and McCain reeling from reasoned foreign policy attacks where Biden does not gaffe around.

3. oh please please let McCain choose Mittens.
It's nauseating to hear Joe go on about how strong Mittens is on the "economy", it was funny when Harwood said "Yeah, but a lot of people lose their jobs after those takeovers."

13. There is some logic to this...
Think about it, not everyone is PC, and Biden is honest and a real regular Joe. He drives a pickup, works hard and treasures his family.
