Mortar blast inside Baghdad government compound

A mortar bomb exploded inside the central Baghdad compound, where the seat of the interim Iraqi government and the US embassy is located, AFP correspondents witnessed.
A plume of smoke could be seen rising above the zone after the blast rocked buildings in the heart of the capital just before 11:30 am (0730 GMT).

Mortar attacks are frequent on the compound, formerly known as the Green Zone and more recently dubbed the International Zone.
