Biden Should Not Seek Reelection to the Senate
In a show of confidence in the Obama campaign, he should drop out of the 2008 senate race.

1. It's rather late in the season. If he's re-elected then resigns a Dem will replace him

(The governor is a Dem)

I don't know the situation in terms of how sure his Dem replacement in the Senate campaign would be to win.

Whatever maximizes holding the seat for the party is what I'd do. I'll wait to hear from some Delewarian DUers.

2. Why?
Not like he actually needs to campaign in order to win the re-election. But to find another candidate this late in the game might be a tad be costly for us. Only way to 100% ensure we keep the seat is leave Biden's name on the ticket.

4. Who's side are you on?
We need the Senate. What a dumbass thing to say on a Democratic board.

6. We are gaining all sorts of Senate seats this year.
No matter, there isn't a Republican in Delaware that could win that seat against whoever the Democrats put up.

It would be an amazing show of faith to decide to abandon his Senate run.

8. And why, oh why would we want to give a "show of faith"?
This isn't a faith based election, you know.

9. You honestly don't see the advantage in not seeking reelection?
If Biden was so confident in the chances of his ticket that he didn't fear for his future senate career, it would be quite a bold statement.

14. I still don't see a scenario where a Republican ends up in the Delaware Senate seat.
How does this even become relevant?

7. It might be his son, Beau
... who replaces him (currently Delaware's Attorney General). Beau Biden is also an army reservist who is heading to Iraq in October.

The governor is a Dem; there will be an election for the post this fall, but the Democrat is likely to win. Whether Joe drops out or stays in the race for now, the seat will stay Democratic.

IMO, this was a VERY good reason for picking Biden over Kaine or Bayh; Bayh would likely be replaced by a Republican appointee and Kaine would wind up handing the governorship over to an archconservative Lt. Governor who would then be in a relatively favorable position for 1 1/2 years and could use that to build support for a run for a full term.
