the media is too snoopy and people blab too much that it's impossible to scoop the supporters first nowadays. Sure, the text message thing was a bit poorly executed, but people shouldn't take it so god damn personally. I think that the housing gaffe may have also shaken things up on the schedule a bit too. Obama did say a couple of weeks ago that the pick was not going to be a surprise.

He kept the media constantly on edge waiting for the announcement and he holds it until the last possible notice. So you found out who it probably is before the text message went out, so what? Obama is still keeping his word, but he could not promise that no one would ever be able to find clues before the announcement was made. Obama dominated the news, and he played the media in a way I have never seen a candidate play the media before.
