So why did Cheney do it? Speak at length about his daughter Mary being a lesbian and his views on gay relationships. His support for states rights on the issue of same-sex marriage. His split with President Bush's push for a constitutional amendment to ban gay unions . Why now?

A few things spring to mind.
1: He is covering his ass in case Bush is not reelected.
2: He wants to use this as a diversion so the media will ask him questions on gay rights instead of the loss of jobs, a failing economy, the Abu Ghurayb prison abuse, the war, loyalty oaths etc...
3: He and Bush have had a possible parting of the ways .
And last : Bush is threatening to cut him lose as VP and this is his way of showing he will not go quietly.

What do y'all think? Cigar is just a cigar or something more sinister?

1. Boston Globe had a puff piece about Powell's rehabilitated image.

Front page, last Sunday, below the fold. Stories like that don't appear out of thin air.

If someone gave me good odds (maybe 20:1, 25:1), I'd put down a dollar that Cheney is being cut loose and Powell is going to be chosen as Bush's new running mate.

and they're trying to ressurect the old "compassionate conservative" mantra from 2000 - only I doubt anyone's buying it this time.

I bet we'll see them trying to show a "kinder, gentler" side at the convention too.

5. During the fight against amendment 2 here in Missouri

the LGBT community went door to door and talked to voters. It was their hope that if the voters could associate a HUMAN FACE to the amendment, instead of some feared other, then they would not support it.

I think people view wedge issues differently when it touches close to home. It is an issue that affects someone close to Cheney. As much as I disagree with this man on almost everything, at least it shows he loves his daughter even if the pugs could care less about other people's gay and lesbian children.

6. Cause they are all hypocrites of the first order?

You can bet your bottom dollar that if one of the Bush twins got pregos, abortion would be in the works. Outlaw abortions? Who cares, Daddy can take care of it.

They don't support what their party stands for in the social issues realm. They don't need to. They are rich. And the rich are different.

It's just politics.

The Republican Platform is 100% against any protections for gay unions.
