ABC -it's now TEN houses... (lead story on Good Morning America)
Edited on Fri Aug-22-08 06:10 AM by brooklynite
3 houses in Sedona, AZ
2 beachfront condos in Coronado, CA
1 condo in Phoenix (used to be two...)
1 condo in Arlington, VA
1 house in La Jolla, CA
1 condo in Phoenix for their daughter
1 additional condo in Phoenix (just for goo measure)

(personal revelation: my wife and I own one house, but there's a bat house attached to it (no bats so far...)

39. Two houses here.
Here's one:

This was actually a duck house. Years ago we had ducks & lived in the country & built this house to put the ducks in at night so predators wouldn't get them. No dog we've ever had has ever been interested in this little house, but this dog loves it! He's excavated the inside so there is quite a hole in the ground!

11. Welll, in the interest of telling the whole truth,
I have one house with a mortgage. So in actuality, the bank owns the house and I pay rent to the bank (for 30 years).

I'm sure most Americans can keep track of the number of houses they own. Now counting the number of loans they owe is another question.

Edited on Fri Aug-22-08 07:22 AM by Divernan
The properties identified to date are probably in McCain's name, but what about properties "owned" by one or more of Cindy's family corporate operations? What about properties outside of the US? Seriously wealthy folks keep luxury apartments/condos in NYC, Paris, London, etc., not to mention private yachts with uniformed crews. McCain is an old Navy type right - so where are his boats?

41. Bing Bing! Yep, this is the REAL story..
and why Politico asked the question, and he wouldn't answer it. It appears that one of the main reasons Miss Cindy won't release her tax returns is that she wants to hide her real estate holdings.

51. According to NPR, Cindy inherited business/estate worth over $100 million.
And I think corporate owned housing is still a business writeoff as a tax expense.

49. McCain owns almost none of it himself...
It's all in the holding of the Cindy Hensley McCain Family Trust, which is designed to pass her real estate holdings on to her children and basically allows them to enjoy this real estate RIGHT NOW without dealing with normal property taxes.

37. Hallelujah! We've established a media narrative!
This has been the one area where Repubs have bested us. They are great at establishing negative media narratives about their opponents. It looks like we've managed to finally do that to. Let's repeat this narrative while establishing others. Unfortunately, modern media is not driven by real stuff like issues. They are driven by superficial personal stuff. However, since we're with Obama on the issues, lets play out this silly game.

43. Republicans are not "great" at establishing media narratives.
They simply serve the same masters as the media giants, and are therefore welcomed.

A minor point, maybe, but it irks me to hear, say, Karl Rove called a "genius" when he is merely corrupt.

44. While your point is also true, Repubs have disciplined messaging
I also don't think Rove is a genius, he's just willing to stoop lower than anyone else to win. Repubs will take a negative talking point and drive it until it becomes a narrative. Our party, in the past, has never been that disciplined in repeating negative talking points. We usually turn to back to important issues like policy. Unfortunately, the media doesn't think that will sell advertising.

I think there are two things that drive narratives in the media, corporate self interest and selling advertising. If a narrative is especially provocative, then people will tune in to follow it. It doesn't require much expense to cover it like real investigative journalism requires. All they do is bring in their trained talking heads to cover it. To overcome the corporate self interest issues, such as low corporate taxes and media consolidation, we need to provide a narrative that a lazy media can use to sell advertising and profit from.

In the past two Democratic campaigns we ran on issues, which ideally should be one of the main reasons that voters choose a candidate. Repubs ran using negative attack narratives and were very disciplined in promoting them. I'm glad that we were finally able to break through and finally establish a narrative against our opponent. One of the reasons, IMHO, is that the Obama campaign has pretty good message discipline.

48. Their messaging is disciplined to death, and would never get airtime on its own.
The macho posturing sells itself, of course, but the rest of the Republican agenda is too laughably dull to propagate without corporate welfare.

38. Trying too hard
to maintain legal residency in AZ. The beachfront homes will be lost to global warming and rising seas. This gives McCain incentive to stay in touch with more neighbors around the country and definitely more fly time which as a former pilot he is plainly addicted to.

I bet some of his stumbles come from nightmares about possible divorce settlements.
