Florida Republican says Dems will "register anything with a heart beat -- anything"
What a nasty, snide, Karl Rovian type remark from Florida Republican Chair, Jim Greer.

You can tell they are really getting worried in this state at the organization of the Democratic party and the Obama campaign. Democrats have registered 250,000 new voters since January, and the Republicans only 98,000.

“Don’t be concerned about that because they register anything with a heart beat -- anything -- and our party and these leaders, all of you, have the best turnout-to-vote organization in the nation,” Greer said. “They (the Democrats) might register a lot of people but they’re not going to the polls on election day.”

This time, my dear Jim Greer, you might just be surprised.

More from the article:

GOP leaders tell party faithful to ignore Democrat party's registration numbers

Republican National Committeeman Paul Senft of Haines City displayed a “wooden nickel” with a parody of Obama’s campaign slogan -- “Change We Can’t Afford” -- and a bumper sticker referring to his former minister, “My Pastor Says God Bless America.”

Senft also recalled Sen. Hillary Clinton’s criticism of Obama from their long and hard-fought primary campaign.

“I hate to say I agree with Hillary,” said Senft. “But she was right -- he’s not qualified.”

And they are still using the tired old slogan that we have not been attacked since 9/11.

“America has not been attacked again since 2001 and that’s something that this president should be commended for every day,” Greer said. “I’ll tell you one thing -- I’ll take a third term for George Bush any day, over a second term for Jimmy Carter, and that’s what Barack Obama is going to be.”

Florida Democratic Party spokesman Eric Jotkoff said it might have been true, before the 2004 election, that his party concentrated more on registering voters than getting them to the polls. But he said that since 2006, the Democrats have won a state Cabinet seat, two congressional seats and nine formerly Republican legislative seats by mobilizing the grass roots. Jotkoff also marvelled at Greer’s dismissal of the “third Bush term” label that Obama and major Democrats have hung on McCain.

“Is he conceding that John McCain is a third term for George Bush? I am amazed that he admits that,” he said. “But, hey, if he wants that comparison, we’ll take it.”

I can not really speak to the Democratic party organization itself, as we have been rather estranged from the local groups.

However I can tell you that the Obama campaign just opened the 3rd office in our medium sized city. One of them appears to be way out of town and rural. Two closer in. I think that is amazing.

David Plouffe on a recent conference call was clearly amazed.

Barack Obama campaign manager David Plouffe held a brief conference call with Florida volunteers tonight, noting that the campaign challenged them to make 50,000 phone calls in 48 hours and they are now at "more than 125,000 calls and counting, which how this campaign is going to be won - people like you in the communities talking to your neighbors and colleagues about Barack Obama,'' he said. "At the end of the day we believe this election in Florida and nationally will be won one door knock, one call at a time."

"In the last 48 hrs you've showed what this campaign is going to be capable of in the fall,'' said Plouffe, noting the demographic shifts and voter registration trends make Florida a strong opportunity for Obama.

Plouffe hails Florida ground troops

The campaign is extremely well-organized as a separate entity and doing a lot of amazing things.

"Whatever they're doing on the grass roots campaign clearly is not working,'' said Republican consultant Doug McAlarney of Tallahassee. "It's clear if they want to run a grass roots campaign, they have to do something different."

....The worry by Florida Republicans is justified 90 days out from election day, with the huge Obama operation under way here. It's also probably premature, given signs that the GOP machine is revving up with more canvassing events and phone banks like the one where Riley works.

But with well over 200 full-time staffers in Florida — four times as many as McCain and the Republicans — and some 150,000 Florida volunteers registered online, Obama is building a Democratic campaign machine that could finally challenge the GOP's mastery of ground-game tactics.

"In a volunteer-driven movement like this, our role in a lot of ways is customer service oriented. We have to make this campaign as accessible to regular voters who want to help Barack Obama as we can,'' said Steve Schale, the veteran Florida strategist leading Obama's Florida campaign.

There are frequent calls to house the Obama campaign volunteers, there are calls to do other things as well. At least we are getting to take part in this historic campaign. People I least expected to take part are making some of the calls.

It is heartwarming after all we went through in the primaries to feel a part of things again.

3. While I do not doubt that the Florida GOP cheats a lot
It is also well known that they have possibly the best field operations of any of the 50 state Republican parties, while the Florida Democrats are known for being bumblers. The way to overcome that is for the Obama people in Florida to brush aside the incompetent state party officials.

27. The GOP controls Florida completely....
elections and all. I get the sense the Obama campaign is aware of that and working around it.

AND, remember, no manual recount in Florida.

Despite all the promises...no manual recount in close elections in Florida.

So we are sort of at their mercy.

47. I still am hopping mad over seeing the trucks
hauling the uncounted ballots away from my precinct in 2000 at 7:30am before the first official call for a recount. That (w)itch Harris could get the trucks at the precincts on time to carry the evidence away honoring the letter of the law that "uncounted ballots must be destroyed" but she couldn't get them there on time to get to the tally centers. Funny, idnit. I still believe that someone, somewhere had the wit to have their VCR on that morning when all the news trucks from West Palm to Homestead were aimed at those trucks hauling those ballots off. I saw the newscasts myself on Channel 7 Miami. I can't believe that the vids haven't surfaced since.

We didn't get a manual recount then either. No news here. We're going to have to do this for ourselves.

I'm not forgiving and, hell no, I'm not forgetting, either.

The only way to get around them, as I've been insisting since then, is to overwhelm them in cheat-proof numbers. Let them whine. If they attempt to steal it again (and I guaran-damn-tee they will) we can take our voters to the streets, armed with nothing more than salad forks and take it by force if necessary.

I fear that it may be necessary. I would walk back to Florida if necessary to see it happen.

6. And the reTHUGs will purge anyone -- anyone.
Check your voter registration status well before your local registration deadline.

I went on line to check mine and found I'd been purged. No clue why. I had received my primary packet and absentee ballot just fine.

San Diego County's new registrar of voters is a former Diebold rep and ChoicePoint (of Florida 2000 infamy) is the company "verifying" voter registrations.

Now that the primaries are over and I can vote across party lines, I'm thinking of re-registering as an independent or even a reTHUG just to help fuck up their stats.

Anyone who has been purged is urged to notify their local Democratic Party because the party is tracking these things. The party also wants to know if you have any difficulty re-registering. This is direct from someone very active in the San Diego County Democratic Party organization.

Apparently, HAVA (Help America Vote Act) mandates an online database in every state for people to check their registration status. In California, we are referred to our respective county websites for that information at this time.

44. Yeah, "they" are not seen as people!
I read conservative viewpoint stuff in the newspapers once in awhile, just to see how the other half lives (up here in Canada), and you wouldn't believe the blatant poor-bashing. I've seen plenty of griping about how those non-taxpaying free-loading low-income people vote the wrong way; they should stay out of the way and let successful people make the decisions. Every time there's a protest or rally about homelessness or poverty, the reaction is "We pay taxes, you don't, go to hell!" A couple of years ago in my city, we had a big fight over proposed public library closures (which fortunately didn't happen). I read a letter to the editor from someone saying to go ahead and close inner-city library branches because they're used mostly by low-income people who don't pay taxes. I guess once immigrant-bashing becomes uncool, poor-bashing comes next.

20. I fear that Florida is already rigged: the strategy is obvious.
Many will be turned away at the polls because their ID is inadequate.
Others registered voters won't count because they didn't verify residency.
Mailed votes will be lost in the post office.
Undervotes will be pervasive in some precincts.
Many "registered" voters will find themselves dropped because their name is the same as felons.

In Florida, it only takes a few hundred votes and a court to win the White House.

The fix is in, and I don't really see any serious challenge at this time. The "illegal voter" bullshit is just a cover.

49. Jim Greer's a master baiter and he's baiting the Dems, of course. Big time.
If he'd said something like "both parties are registering anything with a heartbeat" then I'd be giving him a great big attaboy for saying it.

See, the problem in this democracy is there are too many fucking ignorant, uninformed, unthinking dumbasses who are voting. Because I have the pleasure of living in a liberal enclave but have family and friends in redneck heaven just a few miles away, I get to see the ongoing evidence of this planning malfunction that our Founding Fathers and Mothers just couldn't see coming. Apparently they were so imbued with the spirit of democracy that the only humans with a heartbeat they weren't willing to enfranchise with the vote were the slaves and the women. Since their Original Error we have tried to rectify that gross inequity by legislative corrections (following bloody conflicts, of course), and we have succeeded to a large degree.

Unfortunately, none of the legislation carried a "dumbass" clause, so we are stuck with the problem of every frickin imbecile with a heartbeat--who can register--gets to vote. Even if they can't read, write, don't care to inform themselves about issues, or are too thick to comprehend what the issues are and what the remedies might be, well, they're still swayable so we'll put them on the voter roles.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to see Obama's campaign waging this massive register-the-voters onslaught to help unseat the evil emperor. But my day-to-day experiences with some of my fellow human being type citizen-voter people makes me wonder if there isn't a better way to elect the people who represent us.

Just a reminder to the Obama camp, as so many other DU'ers have said, it doesn't matter how many Dems register and how many Dems vote. If the machines are rigged it's a moot point.

WAKE UP DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP!! IT MAY NOT BE TOO LATE IF YOU ACT NOW!!!

51. Actually, I knew exactly who he was referring to. He was firing up his constituents and baiting us.
It's the same old shit they do any time they need to fire up the base. Plus it serves to make the Dems get all righteously indignant. Like elections are supposed to be white-glove tea parties, or something.

I heard an interesting/scary report today on NPR, I think, but maybe on NovaM, that said that firefighters were polled somewhere and 80% of them believe that Obama is a muslim and that he swore his oath of office on the Quran. Now where does shit like this come from? Guys like Greer.

But the kicker is that the ignorant bastards swallow it hook, line and sinker. Once they're gut-hooked it's really difficult to de-hook them.

I am constantly amazed at the depths our fellow human beings will sink to in the name of power. Amazed and disgusted.

There is an enlightening post on Firedoglake discussing the venal level of attack the Repukes used during the Republican Convention of '04, which came right after the Dem Convention. Of course, we positive-thinking, clean-campaigning liberals didn't DARE lower ourselves to those tactics. I hope to Dog we are ready to get down and NASTY on those bastards this time. If not, it's Munich 1938 all over again.

But I digress.
