Let's pretend McCain is poor
It would best if we did not mock McCain's wealth

This subject could be amusing except for one thing. The richer McCain is -- the more the majority of Red Nation will admire and respect him. It took me three years of reading Southern history to arrive at that sad -- but true -- conclusion. It's similar to what he British called "politics of deference". In this country it was first noticed when Andrew Jackson was president. In the South -- and border states -- men almost always deferred to their richer neighbors. They equated wealth with success and ability. If a man had a hundred slaves he obviously had to know more and be a better leader and role model than a man who only owned five slaves. Or -- god forbid -- one who owned no slaves. There were exceptions, but this was the general rule.

The old Cracker culture (of which I'm a part) was derived from the tribal system from which it sprang. In that culture, anybody who was rich was considered to be a successful man and one to be emulated.

That Celtic border-land (Cracker) culture is still prominent in the South and several border states. So when Obama talks about McCain's wealth -- he is actually building McCain up in what we call Red States. We would do better to avoid this particular tact.

Just a thought from an amateur historian :-)

It's an old story.

2. Sorry. Bullshit. Fail.
His wealth is not the issue. It is the obscenity of how out of touch he is .

Out of touch with middle America, the economy, the world affairs, his own property, the names of leaders. He is OUT OF TOUCH and OUT TO LUNCH and TOO RICH TO FUCKING CARE.

4. I hear you, but if we have to "whistle past Dixie" to win this...
well, as a Jah-juh resident, I can tell you that even GA is changing.

You get a few more transplants and immigrants' kids coming of voting age, along with an energized African American population, and several former CSA states become liberal in a hurry.

7. That's a good and, to a degree, valid point -
but the fact is McCain did not EARN his money, nor did he INHERIT (Daddy earned) his money.

He MARRIED it.

He's a gigolo. He's a kept man, living off his wife's fortune - and THAT garners no respect in cracker culture.

So no, we shouldn't talk about HIS money. We talk about his WIFE'S money.

9. Doesn't his wife own Budweiser?
If if makes you feel better, stop buying BUD. It won't make him poor, but won't make him any richer either :)
