I think a shakeup is needed in Obama's camp
I am sorry to say that thus far they have not run an aggressive and smart campaign. That is pretty much showing in all the polls.

After 8 years of Bush, and while the president's approval ratings are in the 20s, there are more Democrats crossing over to vote for the Republican candidate? :puke: That is simply inexcusable.

Just now the Obama camp decided to go negative against McCain? The Obama camp was just PLAYED by Rick Warren. They have been delaying a freaking VP announcement for what? Its getting almost funny to be honest.

Look at McCain. He was in a similar situation two months ago and they had a major shakeup.

I strongly believe that the Obama camp now needs also to do so. Obama needs to let either Plouffe or Axelrod go.

And for the record, considering the amount of time you spend here, and the considerable bandwidth you've used trashing the presumptive nominee, shouldn't you stop by and pay Skinner a visit?

No. more. whining.

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/08/20/wake_up_obama_camp/

For me, the last straw was yesterday -- in the VFW speech when supposedly Obama was gettting tough against McCain's character assassination strategy -- to watch him speak like a soporific college professor, repeating McCain's charges at length, flattering McCain as honorable and patriotic, and then, finally, sort of begging McCain to take it back! Josh Marshall is totally right to call Obama out on this

He hasn't gotten over the fact that Obama's team beat one of the most well funded, and down and dirty political machines of the past century, and he'll beat McCain as well. Geek needs to deal with that, and perhaps do his posting on one of the many Hillary/McCain sites where Obama hate is all the rage.

102. The problem is with a brain dead electorate
The contrasts are night and day. The issues couldn't be clearer. The failures of the GOP policies are too stark.

The only problem is people are stupid and that includes any Democrat willing to cross the line. What could anyone possibly have in common with John McCain if they are a Democrat?

Why would any sane citizen vote for a SURGE on the stupid policies that have led us to our current pass?

No campaign is perfect but Obama is running as good a one as I can recall but it's very hard to overcome stupid, especially when the Corporate Media keeps the focus off the actual issues and covers for the opposition.
McCain has made gaffes that would have Obama at 5% in the polls.

I also blame Democrats (myself included) for worrying about shattering glass ceilings instead of winning elections. We should not have nominate Clinton or Obama at this crucial stage. We should have rolled out a boring middle of the road white guy and we'd be laughing at McCain's joke of a campaign.
MAYBE. Perhaps, we'd be struggling to some degree or another as it seems like about 40% of people will automatically vote Republican and up to 20% more that can be sold beach front property in Iowa, with the right pitch.

I'm disappointed that we're in for another scrap but I still think we're doing ok. The votes are there, they just have to turn out.

In fact, the polls seem off. We're doing well with white women and minorities and holding the line with white males. That math tells me we are ahead by a decent little margin. The uptick with blacks and Hispanics over the last cycle should actually mean that we've won. I'm either missing some important data or the polls are being manipulated. How can we have increases in white women (though small), blacks, and Hispanics (big time), while not losing anymore white males and be barely up, tied, or down?

I'm still thinking if the younglings actually make the polls that we can make this a little landslide. If we can knock McCain off the box as the default candidate and make him run a race then it'll be a blow out.

99. I with you, from what I see McCain is ripping
Obama apart. McCain has taken the lead with the oil problem, he's been killing him on the old Democrats "tax and spend" charge, nearly everyone believes the surge has worked and the Russia-Georgia war has brought back the "Cold War".

The Republicans are experts at making simple arguments the average voter can easily understand:

Obama=high gas prices=need to drill
Obama=tax increases
Obama=Lose in Iraq
Obama=can't stand up to Russia.

All these excuses I see today are exactly like the ones about Kerry in 2004.

Obama had it easy in the Primaries he ran as the liberal anti-war candidate in the Democratic party and the MSM handled him with kid gloves. Hillary lost the primary because she voted for the IWR, ran more to the center and the MSM was brutal. If she was the nominee now she wouldn't have to be back-peddling on all the promises she made to win the Primaries. Obama needs a pit bull like James Carville running his campaign.

she replaced shitheel Penn with shitheel Garin and still just couldn't pull it off

and it didn't matter anyways because she had already lost it by Wisconsin, she never gained any real ground after that point. just treading water...

don't give me the line about her 'big comeback' because PA, WV, KY, etc. always had leaned to her heavily

face it. your OP is flawed.

72. Hmm let's see
He should kick to the curb the same guys that had him winning a primary that was considered long shot against Hillary Clinton. The same guys that have him leading McCain in virtually every poll. This is after having the MSM and the McCain campaign waging one of the most vicious and underhanded campaigns I have ever seen on a daily basis. So of course you are right he should just dump the guys who have gotten him this far. Instead of useless advice how about we support the nominee and the campaign with their efforts.

78. Where is the Democratic Party?
When McCain accused Obama of wanting to "legislate failure" in Iraq and being more interested in winning an election than winning the war, why didn't Sen. Jim Webb, as a veteran and the father of a combat soldier, stand up in the Senate and denounce McCain for trying to politicize the military.

When McCain starts spouting nonsense about drilling for more oil, where's Rep John Dingell, the Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, railing against an energy policy that is unrealistic and downright phony.

When McCain tries to smear Obama's ethics, where's Ted Stickland, the Governor of Ohio and an ordained minister, to remind McCain that only those who are without sin should be casting the first stone?

Webb from Virgina - Battleground State
Dingell from Michigan - Battleground State
Strickland from Ohio - Battleground State

Silence.

Obama isn't going to win this thing on his own. No candidate can do that. I'm wondering why in the HELL the Democratic leadership is leaving him out there by himself.

that the bubble around many was impenetrable. Rather amazing that some are thrilled at the poll numbers being even, like it's an accomplishment.(just heard on the news that he has lost his lead, which is apparently of little consequence here on DU, but probably significant to the average voter, but let's not fret about that) Maybe he will come back fighting, but one has to wonder how it got this way in the first place. One thing I will agree with, he needs to start throwing punches, and I am hoping that the prognosticators of future events are successful in their predictions that this will happen. I had such hopes for Gore and Kerry too. I'll feel better when McShame is flat on his back, knocked out cold. Til then, I think I'll hold off on my own vacation plans, and be absolutely sure that I can afford it. Thanks.

Since he is busy right now, I hope you take my hint. He told us in the primmary twice to stop attacking Clinton, and now maybe you know why we didn't.

But with that said, I agree with you, and would love to see Obama tear McSames character apart and show "WHY" we don't need the same in the WH, instead of saying we need "change", on attacking McSame.

107. McSame is righting his ship
I would also respectfully submit that Plouffe and Axelrod have not made a good transition from the fight against Hillary to the fight against McSame. Does that mean firing is in order? No -- it's just time to change gears.

The Mideast/Europe trip, then the vacation occurred at the precise moment when McSame began to stop sounding like a stuttering old guy and started to stay on solid, tested GOP talking points. The Obama campaign allowed McSame to grab the momentum and take control of the conversation.

Gas has come down in price 15% from the peak, the Iraq war appears to be winding down no matter who is elected, and now this dustup in Georgia threatens to see the cold war restart. If I had to guess what is happening in the polls, I'm suspecting that line-crossing Republicans and Republican- leaning independents are crossing back to their comfort zone. The urgent need for "Change" suddenly doesn't seem so dramatic.

Here are some examples of talking points I think are ripe:

#1 "If John McCain won't stand up to George W. Bush in defense of his family, how do you expect him to stand up for your family"

To refresh anyone memory (from http://www.boston.com/news/globe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2004/03/21/the_anatomy_of_a_smear_campaign/ )

<<Anonymous opponents used "push polling" to suggest that McCain's Bangladeshi born daughter was his own, illegitimate black child. In push polling, a voter gets a call, ostensibly from a polling company, asking which candidate the voter supports. In this case, if the "pollster" determined that the person was a McCain supporter, he made statements designed to create doubt about the senator.

Thus, the "pollsters" asked McCain supporters if they would be more or less likely to vote for McCain if they knew he had fathered an illegitimate child who was black. In the conservative, race-conscious South, that's not a minor charge. We had no idea who made the phone calls, who paid for them, or how many calls were made. Effective and anonymous: the perfect smear campaign.>>

John McCain's campaign unravelled after this slanderous attack engineered by supporters of George W. Bush. Did John McCain ever call Bush out on this attack on his wife and child? No, on the contrary, there's a widely circulated photo of Bush embracing McCain, and Karl Rove, the mastermins of the 200 Bush campaign, now works for McCain. So, I'guess when he meets Bin Laden at the gates of Hell, he'll give him a big hug, too?

#2 "John McCain may have experience, but he does not have the temperament to be president"

Don't take my word for it. The Arizona Republic (hardly a McCain detractor) said:

<<If McCain is truly a serious contender for the presidency, it is time the rest of the nation learned about the John McCain we know in Arizona. There is also reason to seriously question whether he has the temperament, and the political approach and skills, we want in the next president of the United States.>>

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/aponline/19991031/aponline183823_000.htm

Pete Domenici said:<<I decided I didn't want this guy anywhere near a trigger>>

http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1714082,00.html

McCain himself noted in a 2002 memoir (written after his 2000 presidential race) that, <<I have a temper, to state the obvious, which I have tried to control with varying degrees of success because it does not always serve my interest or the public's.>>
