To Obama camp: *Wake Up*
1. Releasing your attack ads, but not to the media first for free press for fear of "negativity" is weak. The more free air time the better.
2. Obama needs to stop excusing McCain before he attacks, (IE, McCain loves this country too, or "McCain is honorable").
3. Let's see some actual attack ads that have some zing to them, not bog standard issue ads.
4. Your campaign is starting to eerily remind me of Kerry 04. Already we are getting deja vu threads like "wait for the big guns", "Obama's a strong closer", or "he's saving money for shock and awe", etc.
5. The Republicans will attack 24/7 throughout this campaign. The best defense is an offense. Instead of responding to their crap a week later, just start making attack ads and knocking McCain off message.
6. The tv-dinner crowd in fly over country wants a president who does the pushing, not one who gets pushed. This means you have to be a dick sometimes., Sorry, but it's true. You have to be harsh sometimes. You have to be cruel sometimes. You have to be firm. No more responding to McCain attacks while not trying to hurt peoples feelings before you even begin the attack or response. No more responses to questions that carefully calcuate the 10th dimensional theory before you get to your answer.
7. The media loves to replay sensationalistic ads. If you don't make them, but your opponent does, your opponent controls the narrative. This is how the game is played. We can yell "slimeball" at McCain all we want, but it means nothing. Play the game, and play it to win. Worry about "feelings" and "dignity" when your feet are up on the oval office desk when it really matters.

1. weak dollar
2. highest gas prices in U.S. history
3. dead housing market
4. gigantic budget deficit
5. gigantic trade deficit
6. food prices rising
7. unpopular war
8. college costs skyrocketing
9. health costs skyrocketing

Yet this race as it stands now is "too close to call". Why? Honestly, it's because the Obama campaign is doing a poor job right now. Sorry, that's the way it is. If you want kool aid and sunshine there are plenty of other threads to peruse. This one is reality. If the Obama camp does not change course in tactics(and no, the VP pick and convention won't do jack shit unless the core tactics are changed - ask John Kerry about trying to use VP picks and conventions to ride out non-stop personal attacks), McCain will win this thing by 3-5 points in November after nonstop attacks.

It's not working. No VP pick or convention will save you from core deficiencies in your campaign tactics.

19. Um... why the pumasnark? These are VERY legitimate points.
Especially Point 7 in the first group.

Maybe some people like to bring featherdusters to gunfights, but I think we should roll in with a Sherman tank. The FACT is that negative ads work. They work. They resonate. You kill your opponent with a thousand cuts for weeks and weeks and weeks, and by the time you both reach the finish line, your opponent has bled to death.

What I DO NOT understand is why our Dems just don't seem to get this. Gotta keep taking that ol' high road - straight over a cliff.

BTW - Welcome to DU!

These are EXCELLENT points. And I agree with you. Obama's really disappointing me at the moment. Take a week's vacation and let mcsame have the spotlight NONSTOP? Who the fuck is advising him??????????????? Donna Brazile? Mary Beth Cahill? Bozo the Clown? Somebody who's not all that hot on winning, obviously.

Until we and our party face up to this, take ownership of this, and start the most desperately-needed change: the way we fight and how hard we fight, we are doomed to keep losing. And what I fear most is that by the time SOMEBODY wakes up to this, there really won't be an America anymore. Not like the one we grew up loving and believing in, anyway.

20. Completely agree....
Tired of seeing every attack prefaced with "he's honorable" or "I wouldn't say this about him", etc. It looks wishy washy and weak. Tired of the lack of defining Republicans and staying on message. We need to learn how to fight a campaign in the modern media. What shocked me was that the Obama campaign didn't even release their new attack ads to the media for free airings before they launched due to being worried about "negativity". Come on.
