Looking ahead a few moves: convention strategy

Thinking about this, I got pretty worried about how the two conventions will play out. The Democratic convention will be first, and its theme will be party unity, tribute to Hillary and to Democratic women, inclusiveness, Obama's life story, vision for the future, with a little bit of condemning the last 8 years for good measure. This will play good for a day or two, but the whole time the MSM will be nit-picking and trying to make a soap-opera narrative because there are different groups with slightly different agendas. Then the Republican convention will come right after that and it will have a very simple theme: McCain is a war-hero, Obama is a traitor. Each speaker will hit on those two points and nothing else. The media won't have anything to discuss other than "is Obama really a traitor" and "How is this affecting Obama's image" etc. It seems almost unavoidable that McCain will come out of this strong. It works like a charm especially when they go second.

But, there is a way to get the last word. If the Republicans overplay their hand, and just seem nasty after the Democratic convention is about national unity. The meme will have to get out immediately, before the Republican convention is even over. They might fall into it because their product and brand are so weak, they know they just have to pull out all stops this time.
