In asking McCain what his definition of marriage was, McCain, unsurprisingly stated,
"A union -- a union between man and woman, between one man and one woman. That's my definition of marriage."
Then Warren says, "Let me ask you a question related to that. We have a bill right here in California, Proposition H, that's going on, because the court overturns this definition of marriage. Was the Supreme Court of California wrong?"
This "defintition" was not overturned by the California Supreme Court. The point of the decision was that the California constitution did not define marriage as between a man and a woman, so the proposition passed in 2000 that made marriage between people of the same gender illegal, was ruled unconstitutional.
Those opposing gay marriage would like us to believe that when the law allows for same sex marriage, there has been some overturning of the status quo. But, in fact, in California the status quo never restricted marriage to only unions between one man and one woman.
