No "cross in the sand" for McCain in 1973
by Calouste

Shortly after John McCain came back from Vietname in 1973, he wrote a detailed 12,000 word report of his experiences that was published in US News and World Report.

Even though McCain goes into a lot of detail in that story and mentions religion a few times, there is no mention of the cross in the sand story, even though it would have fitted in well with the whole narrative. There are numerous mentions of Vietnamese guards in the reports, mostly bad ones but also good ones, but there is no indication at all that any of them would have been Christian, although " lot of them were homosexual".

So even though McCain yesterday said:

He drew a cross and he stood there and a minute later, he rubbed it out and walked away. For a minute there, there as just two Christians worshiping together. I'll never forget that moment so every day -

That moment he will never forget wasn't worth spending a few of those 12,000 words on.

2. Green Bay Packers Offensive Line story (recently the Pgh Steelers Defensive
Line story) wasn't in that US News account either, I've heard. He has certainly embellished his story from those early days, hasn't he?

4. This "Cross in the sand" was drawn from
the movie Ben Hur where two Christian slaves met in the arena and one drew a cross in the sand to inform the other that "he too" was a Christian and then promptly erased it with his foot to prevent others from seeing it. Maybe McCain was actually there at the time and he got the two events mixed up.

17. It was a Reaganism!
Reagan, too, used to tell stories of things that happened only in the movies, or that he did only in the movies, as if they were true!

12. So, he didn't remember it when he came back, but NOW he remembers it.
He stole the story because it allows him to appeal to Christers.

13. McAin't Lies, Cheats, and Steals
He can't even make up his own lies, so he steals someone else's story and uses it.
If they hear some music that they like, they'll steal that too.

He cheated on his first wife.
He cheated on us all as part of the "Keating 5".

16. The Gulag Archipelago was released in December of 1973.
What a shame - McCain should have waited a few months to write his original story.
