Who would you like to see as the first woman President of the United States?
Imagine that it is the year 2016 and President Obama is finishing up a 2nd term as president. Who would your choice be for the first female president?

Myself, I think we should keep an eye on Stephanie Herseth

I'm not saying she is my choice, but she would be a good national candidate.

she gets the itch to run for political office. Perhaps NY Senator replacing...Hillary or Schumer. If Hillary goes into the Obama Cabinet as SOS or even as Supreme Court Justice the NY Governor may appoint her (Kennedy) to the Senate.

48. I disagree
She was here when the planes hit, the anthrax arrived in the mail, the snipers roamed the city, and guys were getting tossed off the roofs.

She still had the courage to spit in the tyrant's face.

The Democratic party would have more and bigger victories if it had more true patriots like her.

She cowardly introduced articles of impeachment on the last day that Congress was in session, after she had already lost her reelection bid.

56. What's cowardly is not introducing articles of impeachment at all
And to be clear, I'd like to see her elected as a Democrat in 2016.

I know it's highly improbable, but that was my answer to the OP's question.

29. Lisa Madigan?
She's the current Attorney General of Illinois. She's expected to run for governor in 2010. If she wins and wins a second term, she could be a very credible contender for the top job in 2016 or 2020.

Reasons to consider her -- large-state governors tend to do very well in presidential nominating contests, she'll be well within the normal age boundaries of presidential candidates (50 in 2016, 54 in 2020), and she has generally a good reputation (so far) from both liberals and centrists in Illinois, where she impressed reformist groups despite coming out of a big political-machine family (her dad, Michael Madigan, is the autocratic Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives).

She has a big ongoing feud with the sitting Democratic governor, Blagojevich (a huge douchebag, whose approval ratings are in the 30s and may be indicted on corruption charges), and if Blago runs for reelection in 2010, she's expected to challenge him in the primary.

51. Spoke with a Blagojevich-hating (okay, who doesn't?) and Obama-hating Republican Wednesday night.

This guy who mostly hates all things Democratic, says he'd vote for Lisa Madigan in a minute. The coolness twixt her and her father is a big plus.

And before you ask, his hatred of Obama can be summed up by one quote from the man in question.

He kept denying the good things Obama has done for Veterans. And the more points I brought up the angrier he got. But the other people were listening to him as much as they were to me and not sure whom to believe. So when I judged his anger to be at the stupid point, I simply asked him why he kept insisting Obama never did those things. He replied, "because no nigger ever did any God damned good for anybody in this country's history!"

Everyone listening met my knowing smile, rolled their eyes and mouthed an, "oh".

Game. Set. Match.

39. I don't think we'll see another serious female contender in 20+ years
Not from the Democratic side, anyway. It took a very unusual series of circumstances to elevate Hillary to that level. Unless she gets another chance, which is unlikely, I'm confident there won't be a female above 10% level for a couple of decades.

I realize that will be shot down here. Plenty of posters here were falling for the simpleton theme of, "I'm ready for a woman, just not THAT woman." That must have looked really cute in print. It was also remarkably ignorant. There won't be another woman.

58. Herseth is way too conservative
Also, it might be better for Herseth to run against Thune in 2010, or to run for Tim Johnson's seat if he retires in 2014.

Out of the current women in the U.S. Senate, I think Patty Murray, Blanche Lincoln, and Claire McCaskill could someday all make for appealing candidates. Then there's Napolitano and Sebelius, who could eventually have U.S. Senate careers as well.
