Neocon relatives on parade....

Yes, this weekend, we went to visit DH's family and what a fun trip that was....or something like that.

On the plus side, FIL, who is an old style Republican, voiced his hatred for Bush/Cheney and their ilk. He stopped short of saying he liked Obama, but then MIL was in the room at the time.

What I actually wanted to know was if any of you have had the following comments from family members/friends who are conservative....

MIL:
Well, Obama is "scary". (Personally, I think this is code for "he's black")
He hates America, did you hear what that minister of his said?
He doesn't have enough experience....hasn't traveled enough or seen the world enough.
He would be embarrassing to us when meeting with foreign leaders. (I suspect that this one means "he's black" too).

Nephew:
Well, you know all the liberals are morally deficient, look at John Edwards! (He never did respond to our question about McCain or Vitter or any of the others we could think of off the tops of our heads)
Well, all ya have to do is check your tire pressure and the energy problem is gone! (Ok, he's an idiot)

(Note here, DH went off on him and actually seemed to make an impact on the kid)

SIL:
We can't have a black president...what would the world think?
He's not a real Christian, did you hear he's a muslim?
His wife is too loud and opinionated.

It was disturbing to me that these people, after all these years of W and his ilk could say any of this crap with a straight face!

Now, you can all tell me that this is an anomaly and most of the conservative relatives out there are much more sane than mine! Please?

1. Conservatives I know

fall into two camps: racists and sane people. The racists won't vote for Obama because he is black. The sane ones are either voting for Obama because McCain scares them or they are voting for Bob Barr because he is better than McCain and is more aligned with their ideals.
