Evangelicals would like McCain to pick someone like Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for veep. (AP/Brian Wallace)

by James Oliphant

Richard Land, the evangelical leader who earlier this week called Barack Obama "a first-class arsonist" in describing Obama's views on abortion, had some strong words for John McCain in an interview with CBS News.

McCain and evangelical Christians now are partners in a marriage of convenience. But Land said that could change if McCain blows his vice presidential pick. He warned McCain that if he chooses a Tom Ridge or Joe Lieberman, all bets are off.

Interestingly, while Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Committee, said he would support Mitt Romney, he suggested that as many as 20 percent of the evangelical community nationwide would have a problem with Romney's Mormonism.

And he (hearts) Sarah Palin, the governor of Alaska.

2. She's supposed to be an excellent governor from what I've heard,
even though she's a rethug. And she praised Obama's energy plan. I wonder if that'd be a problem?

Sarah Palin Praises Obama's Energy Plan
Posted by Ashish on 08.06.2008

Guess she's off the VP list...

Republican Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, often rumored to be a McCain VP pick, issued a statement yesterday praising Barack Obama's energy plan.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin -- occasionally mentioned as a McCain vice presidential prospect -- has put out a press release praising Obama's energy plan.

Alaska energy politics seem to trump national politics here, though it's also interesting to see a red(dish) state Republican so willing to associate herself with the Democratic nominee.

"I am pleased to see Senator Obama acknowledge the huge potential Alaska's natural gas reserves represent in terms of clean energy and sound jobs," Palin says in the release. "The steps taken by the Alaska State Legislature this past week demonstrate that we are ready, willing and able to supply the energy our nation needs."

This, coupled with the mini-scandal she is stuck in right now, probably makes it safe to remove her from any further VP talk.

5. None-the-less regarding the meat of the story...my crass joking aside.
I am quite itching for Romney in the VP slot. Some of the financial Rethugs would flock his way but the evangelicals will crap themself before they vote for a Mormon.

If Palin is the choice a large number of the so called "Pumas" might use the female draw towards her. Hopefully that mini-scandal you spoke of and her support of Obama's energy plan will put a hamper on that...

6. If the evangelicals are pushing her, that automatically raises a red flag
I don't know much about her, but she can't be all that great if the fundies like her.

4. Seems like the evangelicals should be concerned about McCain's immortal soul.
Seeing as how McCain cheated on his disabled first wife with a much younger, blonder, richer, wife #2.

8. Isn't she caught up in a corruption scandal of her own?.
Firing the public safety commissioner because he wouldn't fire her ex-brother-in-law?

I believe she's being investigated for abuse of power.

I doubt she'll be McCain's VP.

11. Sweet! This Undermines McCain's Experience Attack - Female Dan Quayle
Sarah Palin is a former Miss Alaska contestant, seriously, who was a star high school athlete like Quayle, who would be added to provide youth and charisma to an older presidential candidate.
