I never really liked John Edwards anyway. John Kerry made a HUGE mistake in choosing this clown as his VP in 2004.

I don't agree with what he did, but I still think he was honest in what he wanted to do for this country and the poor. I feel badly for Elizabeth, but if she can forgive him, I sure can.

21. I don't agree on your choice, but
Kennedy's, Roosevelt's, Johnson's, and whoever else's extramarital affairs didn't impact on their presidency. It wasn't until Clinton (and the RW media) that anyone would even delve in to a President's personal life.

My heart goes out to everyone involved (but being a woman, I have the softest spot for Elizabeth.)

Carter, Nixon, probly Truman. Pretty well documented for all the others--Ike, LBJ, JFK GHWB... (I assume Reagan but don't have--uh--hard (ahem) data)...

I hope Mrs Edwards shows us some true grit.I will be truly disappointed if we once again see a dutiful wife humilated standing beside a cheating husband. This is very sad.

Forgiving someone doesn't mean you're spineless and weak :eyes:. You can't judge her, you're not in-the-know.

44. It all depends on their relationship, and how it is now.
We can't pre-judge because we aren't in her shoes. She has to consider her illness, and the kids, and what he's said about the affair to her, how they explain it in the context of their relationship, and what they agree it is going to be like going forward. Whether it was a one-time mistake or a recurring pattern. Only she can judge.

Our neighbor, in the final stages of cancer, caught her husband in bed with our other effing neighbor...and decided she had better things to do than punish him or hold a grudge. She forgave him.

circumspect about how I react. But, in the very short time since this news broke, there have been several tidbits that have trickled out. Like the fact that he hired the woman for a job with a 6-figure salary. And the fact that he has admitted the affair but then says the baby isn't his.

At first all we had was the admission. So everybody thought the baby WAS his. Then he says it is NOT his. But if not, why on earth would he hire her for a job she's not qualified for that brings in a 6-figure income?

Not my fault the whole story didn't come out all at once.

And for a link to ANOTHER post of mine on this subject:

19. I'm disappointed and I'm pissed off about it. Elizabeth seems to
be harboring it well so far. I truly wish we could hear something from her so we would know how to react here at DU.

If it were me, I'd probably be kind of glad that people are angry FOR me. But then I'd probably want folks to be circumspect when commenting, too. After all, she has children to raise and they will always be 100% loyal to their father. And Elizabeth herself is probably still very supportive of John. Otherwise there would have been a break in their relationship by now.

You know how it goes. I can be mad at my husband and say foolish things but I don't want other people to say the same stuff because then I'd defend him. Illogical, but that's how we are about our families.

snip

Again, just so you don't have to waste time following me around.

what else would you expect them to do? In the end, it usually catches up with them, but...they always lie first. So did I whenever I got caught doing something wrong.

What do you think JFK, Johnson, Roosevelt, MLK, and others -- would have done?

I'm not condoning it, the lying OR the affair, but it's to be expected when this shit happens.

But at least Bill waited on that (oh wait he was cheating before he was president too) but at least Hillary wasn't mortally ill. AND Dammit we deserve more from these candidates-they always put themselves first.

HOW ABOUT US-the people-the country-the future of the children FIRST for once?

38. Paternity denial doesn't add up
Why was he visiting her in the hotel - as admitted, and holding the baby as in the pictures (which, presumably, are real since this was the whole thing that got him to talk). Just catching up with an old friend?

Look, even though he had the affair, if he fathered the child I'd have more respect for him if he'd just own up to it and be a father to that child too.

This isn't a legal case to try to twist the facts with. Just let it all out, and take some time away from the public eye. Please.
