Where I live, people assume everyone is for McCain.
My husband had to take care of some business locally. As he and the couple who own the place were waiting for something to be processed, he was enjoying some photographs in a glass case, still chatting happily with the couple. Then she said something about having a funny photograph to add to the case, and she brought it out, placed it in the case and smiled. My husband was speechless, and they knew they had crossed the line. The pic was a phtoshot of McCain in a flight suit, and Obama wearing Islamic apparel. My husband took his items, paid for them, and left without any further chit-chat. He said they looked sheepish and shocked by his reaction. I hope they feel stupid.

1. I knew you lived in Texas before I even looked at your profile
I come across that assumption quite a bit, too.

9. I suspect he'll never darken their doorway. Back in 1993, a checker
at the grocery store said something snide about Pres. Clinton that was supposed to be funny. I politely told him that I like the president and thought he was doing a good job. He was all over himself apologizing to me.

7. I agree with you, but he won't do that. They agreed to provide a service,
and he agreed to pay them, so he did. I doubt he'll ever go back, though.

5. I think he handled it just right
If he'd gotten mad or indignant or whatever, they would have gone from feeling stupid to feeling pissed off at him, shifting the blame for the uncomfortableness of the situation from themselves to him. Which wouldn't have helped them learn not to assume that everyone thinks like them.

With people who are ill informed rather than stupid, it's definitely worthwhile to discuss things, but in cases like this, it's not as though there are teachable moments for this kind of dimwit.

6. My husband had a similar encounter in our small-town Nebraska hardware store.

He's military, and so everyone hanging around the counter discussing politics, including the store owner, assumed he would vote for McCain. They were flabbergasted to hear he supports Obama, and started in with the Limbaugh/Hannity bullshit arguments about Obama (unpatriotic, hated the troops) to dissuade my husband. My husband shot back that McCain is no friend of veterans, while Obama has a great record of supporting vets. He said the same thing as your husband, it got real awkward and quiet. I think any of us who live in very red areas will keep having these encounters, unfortunately.

11. Yeah, that sounds like NE! I've been to Omaha, and hubby goes there
on business sometimes. I know how (former coach) Tom Osborne is practically sainted. Too bad he wasn't a Democrat; maybe there would have been alot of converts.

When these people are confronted with the truth instead of the rw bs lies, it causes them to think for a moment, then they go back to spouting some other insHannity talking point.
