Why is Cindy McLame always with her husband?
Am I wrong or is she constantly at all of his events? Is it to remind people he has a young wife? Or to make him look less old?

Isn't Michelle Obama doing her own appearances without Barack?

8. Just MHO, but ...
As we have all noted to some degree or another, this man is not mentally "with it" - forgetfulness, inability to focus, etc. I suspect he is probably in the early stages of Alzheimer's or dementia.

Cindy would be the best person to know when he's having a "bad day", is more prone to gaffes, periods of confusion - she has probably been dealing with these problems for quite some time, and recognizes the warning signals. Who better to be close-at-hand, able to monitor his behaviour and alert his "handlers" that it's time to end a meeting with reporters, or an appearance at an event, sooner rather than later?

It's long been acknowledged that she didn't want him to run in the first place, and this is probably why. Despite what we may think of either of them, I think she is honestly devoted to the old coot - and is concerned for his wellbeing, as the stress of campaigning is likely to exacerbate already-existing problems.

As I said, it's just my opinion ...

10. I think she's consumed by ambition, and, as the female scion of an authentic, up-from-the-roots
crime family, used to the double life, well-accustomed to living a lie

she's even had her own brush with the law, and is very accomplished in using the media as a foil

her peckishness has been exposed, however, and her likability numbers are nowhere near those of Laura, who share a real 'dis-affinity,' along with their spouses

I'd love to be behind the scenes when those four get together

I see more than a few shades of Cawdor castle in this tale of ambition and hatred:

For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

Oliver Stone should have waited til this Shakespearean drama unfolded til he made his latest movie

15. Consumed by ambition?
She's long had the money, social status, and influential connections necessary to pursue any ambition she might have had. And she hasn't.

I think the last thing on earth this woman wants is to be First Lady, living in a fishbowl where her every move is open to scrutiny. She has always been more than content with her role as "the wife of", a darling of the country club set, free to dish with the girls and not be taken seriously on any topic other than her fashion sense and a flair for decorating.

22. if that's the case, why didn't she kick back, enjoy the life on the social scene there?
she's the CEO of the company, which, even if handed to one as a matter of primogeniture, requires more than a dilettante's managing style. and her charity certainly wasn't done for 'charitable' purposes, when you take into account what happened, and what the eventual climax of that sordid tale was.

you may be right, but I don't see it that way; she's Lady Macbeth

I choose to see it in her eyes, as long as we're making it with the two bit psychologizing

can't I have some fun with this?

be nice.....don't make me feel any more inadequate than I already do

27. I am the last person on earth ...
... who would stand in the way of someone having some fun - with just about anything!

I'm just debating the point that she is "consumed with ambition", when her personal history does nothing to bear that out.

She obviously has problems with self-esteem - if she didn't, she would have dumped the Oldster the first time he publicly humiliated her. What "consumed with ambition" woman - especially one with her own fortune, and not dependent on her 'man' for financial survival - would stand still for being called a trollop and a c*nt in a public forum, and NOT make a grand show of filing for divorce the next day?

There is just nothing in Cindy's past behaviour that lends credence to the idea of being "consumed with ambition" - in fact, there is nothing that points to her having ANY ambition at all, other than being the daughter-of and the wife-of men who have ambitions of their own.

But carry on, my friend, and have a good time all the time!

:hi:

Edited on Fri Aug-08-08 01:26 AM by Gabi Hayes
among some other activities you'll see listed below, is evidence to me of great ambibition; again, why else take on a job like that when it's completely unnecessary?

and, unless they have a completely dysfunctional relationship, (very possible, given just the publicized nature of his actions toward her), with her role being that of a subservient cum masochistic pawn in his own megalomaniacal ambition, the possibility that she has great ambition of her own seems as likely to me (and a more plausible explanation) the reason for her apallingly meek and public submission to his embarrassing public behavior. She's got to be really, really f***** up go along with the sorts of mistreatment to which she's been subjected over the years.

race car driver, pilot, special ed teacher, CEO of billion dollar company/charitable foundation, single mom (in effect, as she spent most of his 26 years in DC back in AZ). that's plenty of evidence for me that she, if not ambitious, was sublimating her deep unhappiness in the guise of ambitious supermom/ceo. and this began at the very beginning of their marriage, so, unless things were bad from the getgo, 'ambition,' self-actualization, whatever you choose to call it, fits the bill for me more closely than what you've described.

what do you have in concrete terms to support your own interpretation?

29. Merely the fact that ...
... she has always had the financial wherewithal, and the influential connections, to have made herself the subject of headlines for decades.

And she hasn't.

"The possibility that she has great ambition of her own seems as likely to me (and a more plausible explanation) the reason for her apallingly meek and public submission to his embarrassing public behavior."

"Great ambition of her own" coupled with "meek and public submission"? Sorry, does not compute.

32. that's what I meant. they aren't supposed to conflate. they're the mutually exclusive
explanations

I provided what seems to me to be evidence of her very active (some might say compulsive....ambitious?) lifestyle, which doesn't comport with the passive persona you describe

I used some examples of what she's done: behaviorial/observational

what's the basis for your explanation, other than her public appearances of late?

I'm trying to present an empirical basis for my armchair appraisal

btw, wouldn't it be swell if she could read these microscopic analyses of the deepest crevices of her personality? I'd feel sorry for her if I didn't hold her and her hub in such crustally low regard. what symbols for all that's wrong with so many aspects of modern day life, starting with the political process, moving on to the power of corporate media, without whom this creepy, venal poseur would never have gotten as far as he has.

77. There were a lot of stories about Nancy Reagan's role in keeping Ronnie's
failing mental capacities from the media while he was in office. I recall that she would often stand behind him and whisper answers to questions from the press during press conferences. A lot of people said that she and his staff were essentially making most of the decisions during his second term.

Maybe Cindy is doing something similar, helping him make campaign decisions. He certainly seems to have slipped since his 2000 campaign.

I would say she probably has a very large ego and a high opinion of herself. She probably was mortified when it became semi-public that Johnny boy was out jogging (I call it running around). I think she's keeping him on a short leash.

i thought i had read this or heard this somewhere... since he can't raise his arms, he can't dress himself, he can't comb his hair, etc. You never know what might happen out on the trail everyday. Getting help from someone can kind of make him look McLame whereas it can be a loving gesture coming from Cindy.

40. Or an older woman and a younger woman?
This discrimination on DU pisses me off. Especially since MANY DUers have a significant age difference between them and their spouses. There is the same age difference between me and my wife, and neither of us sure as hell married the other for money, and since our relationship started on here and turned into a long-distance relationship, it certainly wasn't about the wild sex.

67. Yup, I know what you mean
Our families and friends don't even pay attention to the age difference, but I know other people think it's "wrong." Over the years I've been on DU, I've seen so many threads and posts saying how it's pathetic, sick, wrong, creepy, whatever. Haruka loves me, Mr. DEbi loves Debi (God knows why -- hehehehehhehehe), and Mr. BaL loves YOU. That's all that matters, that we all have found love and it's real. Some people can't get that love is love.

I loathe McCain, but I don't think the 18-year age difference is something to pick on... especially since, as DEbi said, most of the Dem men running this year have "trophy wives."

I'll make sure she sees your "hi"!

he is a literal puppet? It would be much harder to keep the strings untangled and still hidden when there are 2 full sized bodies to be manipulated, I am sure.

47. I think it's partly to help him her husband
and partly because she would have a hard time handling her own events. She had a stroke several years back, and although she appears to have recovered well, she still has short-term memory problems. So she might not be able to give speeches on her own.

and figures she'll be able to trade in McBush for a younger model sooner rather than later if he manages to win.

50. A tight rein is required for both of them.
Easier to keep them in one place.

She'd probably go horribly off-message if she were to do a lot of speechifyin' on her own, but I could be wrong. One thing's for sure; she's no Michele Obama. (Or Elizabeth Edwards, or Bill Clinton, for that matter.)

91. Emergency afternoon delight
It's all about the dick with these politicians. If the wife isn't giving it-then you know what happens. She's wise to be on hand I guess if she doesn't want him giving it to a staffer, I, however would be elsewhere. First wife with no duties is better if you get my drift. Especially with someone like Mc Evil.
