Mark Penn offers Obama campaign advice.... oh goody.

In WH race, strong is often wrong

The image of Michael Dukakis in a tank haunts the Democratic Party

In many recent presidential elections, Americans have had a choice: pick the candidate they think is a stronger leader or pick the candidate they believe is right on the issues. Almost always, they have chosen the stronger leader — even though they have often come to regret that decision.

Strong and wrong or weak and right — that is the choice that Republicans have tried to present to the voters. They will try it again this year; as conditions in the economy worsen and with two wars in the background, Americans are again looking for a tough leader for tough times.

We hear less and less about who the voters would rather have a beer with or ask to baby-sit for their kids — the voters have had it with those kinds of choices.

So take key issues such as the economy, health care and Iraq. Once again, the Democrats lead on those issues by large margins. Americans don’t want their troops in Iraq for a hundred years or even for two years — they want to see the war end and the money spent on military action in Iraq going instead to help relieve our country’s problems at home. They favor alternative energy over drilling and nuclear energy, and they see the health care system falling into increasing disrepair.

I'm tempted to think that if Mark Penn is suggesting something, Obama should do the exact opposite.

But I must admit, some of the advice is sound.

1. At the risk of being flamed, he makes a good point...
Obama is right on the issues ~ instead of caving and looking like he's saying "me too, me too," he should be taking it to McCain. Americans do go for the tough guy who will look after them ~ that's why the notion of a tough male God is so popular here.

2. After Mark Penn's role in railroading Hillary - you'd think he'd go in to a hole
and never come out. Then again, I think he was really working for the repukes all along anyway.

3. Whatever Penn says, do the opposite or verify independently.
I value his opinion less than Fox News comentators.

With the warchest and lead that Hillary started out with, she should have won. But he managed that campaign into the fucking ground.

I frankly don't care what his opinion is about anything one way or the other.

5. When you're running a campaign based on sound judgment
like Obama has, the "strength" argument is not as necessary. Obama can simply point out that McCain is wrong--and we've had eight years of a retarded chimp who refused to change his mind on anything out of some misguided fear of appearing "weak".

Penn's argument is based on an archaic campaign strategy.

6. This from someone whose advice to Hillary was
go negative earlier before helping to run her campaign into the ground.

He may know the right path, but he always opts to take the low road.

In other words, Mark Penn is a sleazy asshole looking for publicity.
