John McCain doesn't recall how he voted on the MLK holiday - while at the National Urban League
Seriously.

Watch it here. Its during the Q&A. The last questioner from the audience, before the Republican nominee is asked if he’ll come back next year. Hopefully, he’ll bring his voting record with him next time.

A reminder of his record on this issue:
John McCain on MLK Day

1983: McCain Voted Against Law Creating National Martin Luther King Holiday. In 1983, McCain voted against passing a bill to designate the third Monday of every January as a federal holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. That was the year the holiday was passed into law, supported by 338 members of the House and 78 members of the Senate. <1983 House Vote #289, 8/2/1983; 1983 Senate Vote #303>

1987: McCain Supports AZ Governor's Effort to Rescind Martin Luther King Day As State Holiday. In 1987, Arizona Governor Evan Mecham rescinded "what he termed an illegal executive order by his predecessor, Democrat Bruce Babbitt, to establish a state holiday honoring the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr." Speaking to the Arizona Teenage Republican Convention, when asked about Mecham's decision to rescind the holiday, "McCain said that he felt Mecham was correct in rescinding the holiday."

1989: McCain Urged Lawmakers To Create State Holiday, But Expressed Opposition To Federal Holiday. In 1989, McCain expressed his support for a state law recognizing an Arizona Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. But, McCain said, "I'm still opposed to another federal holiday. . .but I support the (Arizona) Martin Luther King holiday because of the enormous proportions this issue has taken on as far as the image of our state and our treatment towards not only blacks but all minorities."

1992: McCain Endorsed Proposition Creating State Holiday. "McCain endorsed Proposition 300, which would establish a paid state holiday honoring the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr."

1994: McCain Voted To Strip Federal Funding From the MLK Federal Holiday Commission.

So, after he’s “proud to have led the fight” in Arizona for Martin Luther King Day in 1992, after he was ‘wrong’ about it in 1983, 1987, and sort of wrong in 1989, he then fought to prohibit federal funds from the Federal Commission. Of course, he conveniently couldn’t figure out what the questioner was asking. He could not recall the vote. But he was proud of his record. That he cannot recall.

How Scooter Libby. How Alberto Gonzalez. How Reaganesque. How Republican.

2. didn't he just 'apologize' to the AA Community this spring for holding up
passage of MLKjr day?

I'm SURE I heard him speak on it in the primary run.

I'll search- does anyone else recall this?

7. I think he's used his "hero" status to float a LOT of deceptive
and illegal behaviour. People have given him way too much grace because of his 'history'.

He also knows how to manipulate people- Acknowledging the 'wrong-ness' of his actions, while not having to face any real consequences- His divorce for example- his affair with Cindy- (which broke the Military Code of Conduct) the Keating Scandal- His wife's drug addiction- and how he was able to cover for her, keep her from having a felony record, and go forward with the adoption of a special needs baby from a foreign country despite the drug use and ethics scandal that was happening at the same time.

I never knew much about the 'darker' side of this man, and his family. I "bought the package" that he was a 'likable' - honorable, humble man- Finding out the facts that he has been so skilled at hiding and twisting- shows him to be a much different person than most people would think.

I don't think he cares about covering his lies anymore- I'm not sure it's dementia as much as it is his unbridled lust for the title of POTUS.

And I honestly pity him. What a sad waste of what could have been a very full life. He's had the chance to use his life to really make a positive difference in this world- and couldn't see beyond his own ego.

peace~

8. if you watch the video - he says he was wrong to vote against MLK day
but he had a convenient memory lapse when asked why, after he realized he was wrong, he voted to remove funding for it.

16. Wanna know why so many Arizona politicians FINALLY supported the MLK, Jr. holiday?
It wasn't that they finally were enlightened or found true goodness in their hearts, that's for sure.

It was VOCIFEROUSLY opposed by state Republican leaders and our then-enormously powerful newspapers (both published by the same company) and NOTHING would move it forward in the legislature until--

Wait for it--

the tourism industry lost millions upon millions upon millions. We are talking a HUGE chunk of Arizona's revenue (tourism is, not surprisingly, our Number 1 industry). The budget took an ENORMOUS hit and so did loads of ancillary businesses. Huge major conventions were relocated because we refused to honor it and personal recreational travel dropped off enormously.

McSame did the 180 for the exact same reason the rest of AZ's big-time Republicans did; his big-time financial backers were hurting badly.

There is no other reason no matter what the cowards (like McSame) try to tell you.
