Pretending I'm the Guy with the McCain Sticker on my Car...
So I was thinking today, how would I feel about these McCain ads if I were the guy with the McCain sticker on my car?

Took some effort, but bear with me here. In my hypothetical worldview: McCain is a hero and a POW. I don't know about his penchant for crashing planes or that he was last in his class. In my mind he's just a straight talking, honest guy with a pretty wife. I don't know about his past wife. I'm pretending I'm the guy who is in love with the McCain of 2000 and doesn't know any of the negative stuff.

So I get the sticker. I display it on my car proudly. I am supporting the straight talking guy, the one with the experience. The one who knows his stuff!

And this week I turn on the television and see:

- An ad about Obama not visiting the wounded troops. McCain me says: "That dishonorable bastard! I am glad I support McCain! Anyone who supports Obama is a fool!"

- An ad showing Obama surrounded by thousands of people, waving flags, interspersed with Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. McCain me says: "That Obama's too big for his own britches. He's really too popular. Britney's hot, but why is my guy talking about this? He's the one with experience! Why are all of his ads about Obama? I hate Obama. My guy ought to be showing everyone else what he's made of!"

- An ad showing Obama surrounded by throngs of people, heavenly light, deep booming voices and choruses and freaking Moses. McCain me says: "What the fu..? Wait I'm a good Christian... Why on earth won't McCain stop obsessing over Obama? I hate Obama! Why isn't McCain showing everyone what he can do? He's the guy with experience! And dammit now my pastor is making grumblings over blasphemy in church on Sunday, and my Bible Study members are shaking their heads... McCain what is going on? What happened to your magic?"

McCain is killing his brand. If I were the proud 'Merkin who slapped that McCain sticker on my car early on, I would seriously consider slinking out to the garage and removing it right about now. From the avid McCain supporter's point of view, their guy needs to stop focusing on Obama - after all, the media loves Obama and everyone else is focusing on Obama, right? They want him to be the Maverick! The Straight Talker! All they are getting is this weird stuff, and McCain supporters don't really go for weird or edgy. They're hotdog and apple pie people.

McCain is being very, very stupid.

1. Therein lies the problem.
Anyone who supports ANY hard-right Republican politician at this point despite what 28 years of mostly uninterrupted rule by them has done to this country is too far gone to even have a modicum of reasoning such as the one you displayed. Their dumbassedness is incurable. That's why they have a McCain bumpersticker.

2. True. Intelligence and reason have nothing to do with it. nt

3. I never claimed the "McCain me" has reason...
I think that McCain supporters are dumbasses who are low information voters -- But I'm telling you when they see these ads their hatred for Barack and their annoyance at McCain for showcasing the guy he hate instead of being the McCain Maverick of 2000 is what will turn them against McCain in the end, or at the very least demoralize many to the point where they aren't going to vote.

I never said reason or intellect came into it. I'm talking "gut feeling" for basic morons. They see their precious Maverick fawning over Obama in ad after ad, and I think it will turn them away. They didn't support McCain to see him drown everyone in Obama ads.

4. Your post would be a McCain supporter governed by logic, not emotion

They're not.

5. I disagree...

Nothing in my post implies logic. It's all about emotion. They don't want to see their Maverick obsessing over Obama. They think the media already is in love with Obama and McCain's commercials are doing nothing but feeding into that.

Edited to add: Can you point out what "thoughts" my idea of the typical McCain guy has in the original post that you think are logical... Because I don't see any that are.

6. They probably put the McCain sticker over the W one

and the only thing they are concerned about is either, drilling for more oil for thier Humvee or Yukon, Abortion, those pesky gay people marrying, and someone trying to take their guns.

So with that in mind they are probably quite content with the McCain sticker on their Humvee.

7. Are there a lot of people who are super pro-McCain?
It seems like most of them I have seen are of the "yeah our guy sucks, but your guy sucks way more" variety. Pretty much the way they have felt since Reagan. Free Republic was very anti-Bush before he was the candidate in 2000.
