Obama campaign manager: buckle up

Obama campaign manager: buckle up

The Swamp

by John McCormick

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe charged today that Sen. John McCain's Straight Talk Express has taken a "nasty turn into the gutter" with a new ad that features pop stars Britney Spears and Paris Hilton.

Noting that McCain said he is "proud" of the campaign he is running for the presidency during a stop today in Racine, Wis., Plouffe added that he believes the Arizona senator ran into a "ravine in Racine."

"It seems like we hit another low note every day with this campaign," Plouffe said on a conference call with reporters. "This was not the John McCain voters were expecting to see in this campaign."

The conference call was pegged to the release of yet another campaign web site. This one, called "Low Road Express," is sponsored by Obama's campaign and claims a mission of documenting and fact-checking McCain attacks.

Plouffe said McCain's campaign was using Republican operative Karl Rove's playbook, but had taken it to a "further extreme." He was joined on the call by Susan Eisenhower, a lifelong Republican and granddaughter of the former president.

"I don't think that these kinds of comments and innuendoes have any place in a presidential campaign of this importance," she said. "I also think that ordinary voters are tired of the kind of swift-boating attempt to bring out the negative side of -- the twisted ways -- that they can create negativity about people."

1. Problem is that people say they are offended with negative ads, but they appear to work on some.
Rove/Bush/Cheney et al have been using the playbook flawlessly - float lies and mischaracterizations - once they are out there, it is nearly impossible to disprove them, and the seed of doubt flourishes in the braindead masses.

Again - they would not do this if it were not effective. Dems try to play above board, don't like to sink into the swamp - and we end up losing elections (or they become stolen...)

2. heh
"ravine in Racine"

corny pun, I don't know why it makes me laugh. Does anyone remember when Mark Penn was demoted and David Axlerod said on Morning Joe "I guess that the sword is mightier that the Penn." I was embarassed for finding that funny too.

4. I like the way Susan Eisenhower puts it:
"the twisted ways -- that they can create negativity about people."

McCain is twisted.
