James Warren: McCain's Attack Ads Ridiculous but Quite Dangerous for Obama
James Warren, Managing Editor of the Chicago Tribune said that McCain's latest attack ads against Obama are indeed ridiculous and that McLame has taken the low road; nonetheless, these ads may create such a negative image for Obama in the short run that they may be quite dangerous for the Democratic candidate. Futhermore, he said that Obama's campaign should counteract these attacks quickly and effectively or run the risk of being defined by McCain's shameful machine. He also opined that Rick Davis's statements earlier on MSNBC (Andrea Mitchell) were incredulous and not convincing and that indeed McCain was the one playing the race card. But he underlined the imminent danger for Barack Obama if he does not answer and combat the lies that McCain is saying in his low-road campaign.

A poll taken after the troops ad was released shows Americans by more than 70% don't believe what the ad says and believes Obama cares about the troops.

6. He's right
McCain has been taking the lead defining Obama, and not vice versa. He's been playing offense lately.

7. There are times that a man has to respond with force and this is the time for Obama
he cannot let McCain define him because if he waits until October it will be too late. Obama is relatively unknown to the country and in politics you only get ONE chance to define yourself and McCain is trying to define Obama in a negative way because the despicable GOP nominee knows that Obama is about to run away with the election when they talk about the issues and he needs to stop him now and thus we see the onslaught of negative and personal attack ads.

8. He IS countering.
It's just being largely ignored.

Looks like we'll have to pay for every message, while they give free air to McCain's ad several times a day as part of the "news cycle".

9. I agree with that
They are ridiculous and sickening and false and yes people "see through" them. But it's the drumbeat that undermines confidence and begins to define Obama on the GOP terms. that is the danger. drip. drip. Drip. And if people feel they dont know who he is, if they don't even know if he's a "christian" etc. on and on. Revolting.

It's all very well to say "not this time". But what does it actually mean?
