Obama T-Shirt by Alex Ross "It's Time For A Change"
For those who don't know, Alex Ross is one of the most popular artists in comic books today.
If you like his art, check out Marvels (in tradepaperback from Marvel) and Kingdom Come (from DC).

Get these shirts straight from the source here:
http://www.graphittidesigns.com/
or from you nearest comic book store:
http://www.freecomicbookday.com/fcbd_locator.asp

They have been solicited for October shipping, but may be available sooner.

"Time For A Change"

"Uncle Sam F.U."

"Draining Liberty Dry"

"Make Love, Not War"

If you order them direct from Graphitti, you can get them up to 3X in size, but only up to 2X if you order them from a comic shop.

I like his Obama painting so much, it's now my sig pic.

15. But THAT'S what makes it ironic
Does Larry Craig ring a bell?

Or ANY of the other Republic stalwarts who profess to hate gays and are secretly (or not)gay themselves?

Plus, the title (and it's probably on the shirt somehwere) MAKE LOVE, NOT WAR. It show the 2 biggest war-mongers practicing LOVE, not WAR.

Christ, to have to explain the obvious to people.......

Again, I see two men who represent a hostile government towards GLBT Americans. And they're kissing.

I don't see anything "ironic" about that, at all.

Edited on Thu Jul-31-08 03:02 PM by jane_pippin
folks are also trying to say. That those two are simply gross, despite getting the main point/intention of the image. And in addition, some of those posters (and pardon me for making assumptions that may be false as far as who you were referring to goes) are also gay, which adds a dimension to the image--an offensive one given the slew of "republicans are so gay," (which equates gay with evil, of course) kinds of posts that have cropped up here and elsewhere fairly often--that straight viewers may not immediately pick up on, hence the being offended and I'd say justifiably so.

You're right, it does suck when you have to explain things.

Then, take your dictionary and shove it waaaaaaay up your ass.

Since the picture in question isn't "homophobic"(it's just how you choose to interpret it because everything's about you), your accusation of homphobia is full of shit....just like your dictionary will be after you insert it in your rectum.

After you've fully inserted said dictionary (might I suggest the Merriam-Webster) in your orifice, take the Encyclopedia Britanica and shove that in there for good measure.

Have a grrrreat day :hi:

62. I have to agree!
I have read many a time on the web, and heard it in person, that if someone is offended by something, it IS offensive to them, regardless if it's "really" offensive in reality. The point is, this painting of the two of them kissing, I believe it's meant to shock because it comes across that it's being done to render a laugh about the two of them, B*sh and Cheney, in a gay embrace, and don't you KNOW that the image of two men kissing is bizarre, exotic, and funny to see. I can easily see how some would be offended by it, because it is (at a high majority ratio) going to be viewed as a 'laugh' shirt, and will sell based on that premise, and rarely be viewed as an intellectual statement of how ironic it is to see an image of the two of them kissing when they're blatantly homophobic. PUH-LEASE! That would not be my opinion if I saw it, and I know it would INSPIRE (key issue here) mockery about gay men as being gross, etc. Especially because these two are evil bastards, and of course, therefore they're GAY.

1) Obama is not a superhero. He's a politician that I happen to support. He's the best person for the job right now, but he's no Superman or "messiah" or even a "rock star". "Support" is not the same thing as "worship". Only idiots and assholes would confuse those two terms.

2) Don't care. How am I supposed to feel about a fictional character flipping the bird? Means nothing at all to me.

3) I can understand this one, but it still doesn't mean anything to me in realistic terms.

4) WTF? Cheney and Dubya are supposed to be MORE evil because they're making out? Evil people are homosexuals? Fuck you.

I can't offer comments about anything unless I can do a better job?

OK. Kenny G is a crappy sax player. I can fart better than he can play. (Is THAT OK?)

And yes, I admitted that I could see where the "artist" was going with #3 (can you read?), but I found it to be ineffective. My opinion.

Let's talk more about #4, if you don't mind. How does painting Dubya & Cheney as homosexuals reflect poorly upon them?

EDIT: I was offering a "fuck you" to the artist, not you. Unless you're the artist of #4, in which case my "fuck you" still stands.

39. Okay, where does the painting say that they're homosexuals?
It is merely a play upon the old 60's phrase MAKE LOVE NOT WAR (hence the title of it).

If you see the painting as depicting them as homsexuals, that's YOUR hang-up, not necessarily the intent of the painting.

I see two WAR mongers choosing LOVE instead. Does it have to be homosexual love? If that's what you bring with you when you look at it, then I suppose so.

But that's not how I viewed it. I don't really give a flying fuck if you agree with that or not.

Art is subjective. Your opinion is merely that. An opinion.

And while I don't really care for Kenny G, he does have talent.

Since he's sold millions of CD's, he must have a fan or two.

Are they wrong?

No.

That's merely their opinion.

47. no shit
Some are looking for excuses to be outraged and will find it anywhere.

By their reckoning, Michael Moore must also be a homophobe.

In F9/11 he showed pictures of Bush (one of the most evil men in the painting) holding hands with and kissing an arab. So, that MUST mean that Bush (and his owner in the pic) are therefore homosexuals. According to their "logic", that MUST mean that since they are evil AND homosexuals, then that must mean that Mike is saying that all homosexuals are evil and evil men are homosexuals. At least if that's the case, I'm in good company.

Talk about a pretzel of logic.

Makes Bush hungry. Yum Yum.

But thanks for the kind words.

At least a couple people got it.

48. I've always liked that BushaLugosi one.
I think the Village Voice used it for their cover.

The Obama one is nice. The kissy one is cool because I imagine the sight of it would piss the hell outta of both of them. :)

55. be careful with those sentiments
the pc police and drama junkies will attack en masse, as you can see from some of the posts.

Some people see what they want to see, not necessarily what's there. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Some people have a need to be offended. Not everything is an attack on them. Every so often the world stops revolving around them.

I was trying to remember where the BushaLugosi painting had appeared before. Thanks for the reminder.

Apparently the Village Voice is unaware that they had hired a raging homophobe (see one of the rants above) to paint that cover:sarcasm:

I can just imagine what the freeper response to the Make Love Not War painting would be. They've all but issued a fatwa against Alex Ross and myself here. Over there, I bet they'd go nu-cu-lar.

:hi:

64. So, the consensus is on the 4th shirt...it's ugly and it's homophobic.
Well, I'm glad that's been decided.

Discussion over.

81. I've come to the conclusion that most threads on DU are ignored unless
posters can find a way to call the OP or what they've posted stupid, valueless, inflammatory, cruel, incompetent, racist, sexist, homophobic, or otherwise find a way to put a negative spin on it. Probably a good 60-70% of the people posting on any discussion board go there to find someone to belittle, thereby making themselves feel superior for one fleeting moment. It's disappointing to say the least.

65. If I'm a "homophobe" for posting this pic
Edited on Fri Aug-01-08 04:41 PM by Cheap_Trick

"Make Love, Not War"
then Michael Moore MUST also be a homophobe as well. In Fahrenheit 9/11 he showed these pics on screen:

LOOK! Bush is kissing another man in the pic! OH NOES!! Mike MUST be implying that these men are gay, and since they are evil, then he's saying that all gay men are evil....

At least that was the "logic" thrown at me.

He even had a song playing with the pics. Is that what was different? I didn't have musical accompaniment? Otherwise, the pic and the painting are similar.

67. Moore's intent was to show how buddy-buddy Bush is with the Saudis.
I have no idea what your intent was, but all the "fuck you" and "piss on an electric fence" shit in this thread seems to show a lot about you as a human being.

I don't know if you're a homophobe (though you certainly have a little bit to learn about sensitivity to GLBT concerns -- ooh, loog at that big fag Giuliani http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=3419701&mesg_id=3419999) but I do know you're a pathetic excuse for a human being who seeks to get his way through bullying, browbeating, and intimidation.

Go ahead and tell me to piss on an electric fence, go ahead and say "fuck you." The taunts of an emotional third-grader hurt me about as much as... well, nothing.

71. Now see, there you go again
Edited on Fri Aug-01-08 08:27 PM by Cheap_Trick
where did it say or imply ANYTHING in my post about Giuliani being a "fag"? Although you seem to be following me around now, just to see what homophobic stuff I'll say next I guess. Not a little creepy and just a bit sad, but go for it. You obviously need a hobby. Talk about a pathetic excuse for a human being.

The article was about drag queens in New York. Those pictures of Rudy have gotten lots of mileage around here. You'd better go brow-beat and whine at everybody else who has posted those pics. Or quit whining to me.

You see what you want to see, because you and others have a pathological need to be offended. If it's not homophobia, it's sexism, racism, or any other ism.

Must be nice to be such a warm, flawless human being.

You simply MUST tell us how it's done.

BTW, although it should have been painfully obvious, the "intent" was to show 4 t-shirts for sale by an artist I happen to like.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Maybe you can point out ANYTHING in the OP which states a different intent (not something inferred).

P.S. Here's my latest OP. I'm sure you'll find SOMETHING to offend. Have at it.http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=210&topic_id=23157&mesg_id=23157

73. Again? I don't think I've ever posted to you previously.
Didn't say a word through this whole thread. Didn't say anything about the OP -- in fact, I kinda like the first design.

I've never noticed you before, which is funny, because I like Cheap Trick and would think I'd notice the username. Everything I posted is based upon the way you lash out like an child at any criticism. The way you've abused people on this thread is simply sickening. Even the people who tried to be constructive with their criticism, you responded with a torrent of F-bombs and sundry vitriol.

Yes, I did a search on your name and found the Giuliani pic. Does it make you a bigot? Not in itself, but between it and the protesting-too-much over the perceived homophobia in the last image of your OP does seem to establish a pattern. Are you a bigot? Are you a right-winger pretending to be a lib in order to troll this site? I don't know, and I'm not accusing you of either of those things -- though I do know from experience that the most over-the-top in their devotion to their proclaimed cause often have a second face.

But no. I won't call you a bigot. I won't call you a right-wing troll. I don't know either of those things. What I do know from observation in this thread, is that you have an overinflated sense of self-importance, that you handle criticism worse than my children, and that you treat other people like refuse.

Or, in your words, fuck you. Go piss on an electric fence.

BTW, the movie posters are quite good graphic art.

76. When I started the post
it was, as I said to simply bring to other's attention some shirts I thought some might find interesting and how to get them. If I'd had "homophobic" intentions in mind, I really wouldn't have cared if it made some mad. That kinda would have been the point(and it would have been the only pic posted). But then the pile-on started with the pitchforks and torches and cries of HOMOPHOBE!! So I got pissed. My bad. It happens (and not just with me). I just didn't think about the picture in those terms so it didn't occur to me that someone else might. I know the intent wasn't there on my part and I'm reasonably sure that it wasn't with Mr. Ross either (based on what I know of him).

77. Perhaps you should try a more measured response to the criticism.
Maybe I'm missing something, but the first few critical replies were only talking about the artwork in question. It wasn't until you started getting over-the-top defensive that the criticism became directed at you personally.

Instead of reacting defensively, you might be better served to engage in a constructive debate with people -- explain why you don't find the image homophobic, without resorting to calling people idiots; and try to understand why they do find it homophobic.

I certainly understand their point in the context of the GD forums. There have been a LOT of "pole smoker" Bush jokes made over the years which basically play out thusly: "Bush = evil, Bush = gay... make your own inferences." I don't know if you've ever engaged in that, but the prevalence of this meme has led to a lot of people feeling very raw in regards to the issue. Sad to say, there is a lot of homophobia on DU. I think the mods do their best to delete homophobic posts and ban repeat offenders; but they have other things to do than constantly be on the lookout for "Fag Bush" trolls. So a lot of it stays.

Maybe it's unfair that you've been the recipient of some of the vitriol others have engendered. But you didn't help your case with your replies in this thread.

80. He should have had the Obama logo on his shirt
it would have made it just a little more visually interesting. Other than that it's pretty cool.

One of our local comic book stores-Uberbot-is having an Obama art contest this month, with proceeds being sent to the campaign. There's quite a few Dem comic book artist and illustrators in the area, so it should be good!
