1. I don't think he has to.
Just him laughing at McCain, like he did today in his speech, is enough. It must be driving the mouthbreathers Crazy - how deft Obama is in insulting, without really insulting.

25. I Agree
I think the way to handle McNasty is not to do the same thing. The Obama campaign is setting a trap for John McCain and the way the new commercial handles the attacks is brilliant. McCain is doing what Bush did to Kerry making people choose him because they hate Obama or doubt his ability to lead. Thats the problem Obama has, he needs to counter that and the way to do it is to tie McCain to Bush and show that McCain is more of the same shit we've put up with for the last eight years.

2. Or, even better
Recast the commercials in his image so you can't tell them apart. If there's anything a wingnut fears more than being bullied, it's being laughed at.

3. I disagree completely
Same shit was said during the primaries about Obama needing to get nasty on Hillary.

He didn't need to go there then and he doesn't need to go there now.

5. He sure does! His poll numbers are dropping. He has to hit back before they define him!
His race with Hillary was one thing. This is a race with vile, disgusting pigs and you can't win by being nice.

8. But don't you see what's happening
You have McCain advisors losing it on national TV. Reporters are debunking McCain's ads. His former advisor calls it childish and is concerned about McCain's campaign.

You don't step in right now. McCain is hanging himself. You wait and see how McCain handles it. Right now Obama is seen as being the mature one.

26. I hope so but I found out in 2004 some Americans are stupid. They saw what type of person Bush
was. They knew EXACTLY what they would be getting that time around and they chose Bush over Kerry. They believed all the spin and lies about Kerry. I'm terrified that they might believe this crap about Obama.

It appears, at least this week, that the press is starting to challenge McCain. I hope this continues.

6. I couldn't possibly disagree more...
He needs to stick to the high road. Sometimes the high road is mistaken as a high horse by those wallowing in the gutter... I'm sure that's how McCain and his base will see it. So be it.

Obama needs to keep on keeping on just like he is doing. It takes two to tango, and I applaud Obama for refusing to dance.

9. I disagree
As soon as he does that, the new media refrain - prompted by the McCain campaign - will be "Obama promised hope and change but do these new negative ads prove he's just playing the same old political games?"

Going negative now will undermine his overall campaign message of hope and change. This campaign was supposed to be a high-minded affair with both candidates pledging to be respectful of one another. A couple of months later Obama is still taking the high road and McCain is rolling around in the mud. One of the candidates is staying on message, the other is flailing - and looking increasingly miserable and desperate.

Personally I'm enjoying Obama's response of "Is this the best you've got?" It diminishes McCain's tactics and makes him look petty, while making Obama look like the bigger person. He's not whining - just shrugging off McCain's attacks.

That's not to say that there won't come a time when the Obama campaign will start rolling out hard-hitting anti-McCain ads, but I think that for now they're perfectly happy to stay on message, stay above the fray, and let McCain completely undermine his own "maverick," "respectful" image.

The "McCain hugging Bush" ads will come later, when McCain has sufficiently damaged his own brand all by himself.

20. Obama should come out even more confident...
he should throw his huge adoring crowds in their faces. Obviously it's his confidence and populism that scares them and they're trying to shake it.

22. I like to think
That the American people want hope. That they're tired of the fear and negativity of the past 8 years. That they want answers. And that's what so many people like about Barack Obama and his campaign.

I hope that these ads of McCain's aren't effective. That it's just a media story.

31. Agreed
I have no doubt Obama will attack but only when he chooses. He dictates his campaign, and no one else does. He also, apparently dictates McCain's campaign, as Johnnie seems to be in react mode.

and do it emphatically. Hell, they've already given the Obama campaign enough ammunition to define Republicans for what they are- and sink them TWICE.

Of course, every year you'll get folks who'll say "oh, but we're not like that" "we don't need to lower ourselves to that level."

Or "what will :gasp: the media say about us?"

And every year that candidates refuse to accept politics how it is rather than how they wish it would be means another year of losses.

Amazing how some people never learn.

Bunch of self righteous losers, who'll drag everyone down with them- just as they've done so many times before.

Obama needs to stay on his path and let McCain implode on his own -- which is happening more quickly than any of us have expected. :)

One of the things that is so attractive about Obama as a poltician is his temperament -- even, not easily rattled, steady. He should just keep to stating the facts about McCain and just let Johhny's bullshit roll off his back.

14. If Andrea Mitchell is barely able to hide her contempt for the ridiculousness of the McSame ads
(witness the sure-to-be-available-soon segment with Rick davis today), I think the Obama campaign is doing just fine.

Take a walk outside and breathe and listen to the birds sing, it'll do you good.

18. Going nasty helps Repukes, hurts Democrats, especially if they're black men!
Imagine Obama getting nasty with McSame:

1. First, the media will cover for McSame, trashing Obama for playing dirty politics and flip-flopping on his pledge to remain above the fray

2. Second, no matter what anyone says, Obama is a black man. Imagine if he were to go nasty against McSame. Imagine all the hatred, charging him of being an "angry black man," scary and cocky. Threatening! He's threatening an old white guy

3. Third, WHERE ARE THE DEMOCRATS!!?!?!??! WHERE IS THE LEADERSHIP??? WHERE IS THE DNC??? Why aren't they fighting back? Is it Obama's job to fight alone? Where are they? Pelosi, Reid, Dean, etc.?

19. He should follow Truman's model:
"I don't give 'em hell, I just tell the truth and they think it's hell."

Your response is borne of frustration and fear. We all have at least a little
PTSD after 2000 and 2004. I have decided to stay as calm as I can and trust
that Obama and his team are the smartest Democrats running for the presidency since
Clinton who beat an incumbent president.

When your fears overrun your wisdom check in with
Al Giordano's blog: http://narcosphere.narconews.com/thefield

He sane calm approach will help get you through this rough election cycle.
He stablizes me everytime I slip. He was most helpful in the primary.

Remember above all else that Obama knows what he is doing. They knew this
was coming, probably not so soon. But that's OK. They have more time to prepare.
Also remember these attacks hurt McCain more than they do Obama.

21. And therin lies the irony
All the Dems ever have to do is tell the truth about their opponents and frame it forcefully. But, time and again, they refuse to.

Time and again, they delude themselves about the nature of the electorate.

And time and again- they lose.

They are coming from fear. I think the term is learned helplessness. The Repubs
have turned them into the "frightened rabbits" of politics. The party is definitely different
than the one I grew up with. These tepid creatures would have never investigated or
forced Nixon to resign.

What a sorry lot they have become with some exceptions of course.
