Obama On The Britney Ad: They're Painting Me As "Risky"
By Greg Sargent - July 31, 2008, 10:53AM

Did Barack Obama cry racism and xenophobia in responding to the Britney ad? Last night, Obama turned up the volume a notch in response to the spot:

"Since they don't have any new ideas the only strategy they've got in this election is to try to scare you about me. They're going to try to say that I'm a risky guy, they're going to try to say, 'Well, you know, he's got a funny name and he doesn't look like all the presidents on the dollar bills and the five dollar bills and, and they're going to send out nasty emails.

"And, you know, the latest one they've got me in an ad with Paris Hilton," Obama said, referring to a McCain campaign ad launched today. "You know, never met the woman. But, but, you know, what they're gonna try to argue is that somehow I'm too risky."

Some folks are arguing that Obama is accusing the McCain camp of racism. The dollar bill line sounds like it could be an allusion to race, but Obama has said similar stuff before, and this isn't quite conclusive enough to support that claim.

What's more, the "risky" part certainly doesn't have to be an allusion to race. Obama could easily be saying that the ad is painting him as "risky" by portraying him as a lightweight who doesn't have the leadership qualities necessary to be president.

Separately, it should probably be pointed out that the Republicans are not exactly strangers to using race to frighten voters, so it's perfectly reasonable for the Obama camp to expect such tactics to be used against him.

1. Yeah, I think he needs to respond soon.
Maybe live on a stupid cable news show, not in an ad.

He needs to take on these "Raising Taxes" and "Foreign Oil" bullshit accusations head on, point by point, in no uncertain terms.

2. Yes he needs to do an advert that pre-empts with an ad that says this.

3. Boycott corporate media
I had to post this as a reply because I haven't been a forum member long enough to start a new thread.

I just read a Fox news article about how some Americans won't vote for Obama because he's too thin, and something snapped. http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/08/03/report-obamas-slim-build-could-turn-off-americas-portly-voters/#comment-484895">article

We need to stop this kind of ridiculous and biased reporting from the corporate media!

The one way to make them take notice is to hit them in the wallet. How can we do this? It’s simple: don’t buy the product.

Don’t watch corporate media news on television.

Don’t buy any products advertised on television network channels – buy store brands as much as possible

Don’t buy media magazines or any magazine connected to a media corporation

If we did this for just 4 weeks, think how much revenue these companies will lose! I’m not saying lock yourself in a closet and hibernate for 4 weeks. You don’t have to give up television during that time, just steer clear of the network channels in the list below – there’s plenty other channels to watch. And if you just can’t give up those channels for 4 weeks, simply make a list of products they’re advertising, and don’t buy them. Simple as that. Money talks, people.

Barack Obama offers us a chance to change America. Notice that he says that WE the people have to be a big part of making that change. And WE can do it!

I really believe this approach will make corporate media take notice. Unfortunately, I am just an everyday citizen with little knowledge of how to implement it. I’m hoping that the right person or persons will read this in one of the many places I am posting it and take action.

Let’s boycott corporate media!

A Citizen for Obama ‘08
