New York Times ascribes "McNasty" to the DNC
From the New York Times, July 31, 2008, Page A1:

"McCain Tries to Define Obama as Out of Touch"
by Jim Rutenberg

"Mr. Obama’s campaign seized on those concerns, trying to turn the tables by portraying Mr. McCain as cranky and negative. The Democratic National Committee called Mr. McCain “McNasty.

The DNC?
A brief fact check reveals that "McNasty" (along with "The Punk") were McCain's nicknames in High School:

McCain the 'Punk' Goes Back to School
Once 'McNasty', Presumed Republican Nominee Praises Teacher's Influence
By ED O'KEEFE
April 1, 2008—

John McCain is a punk. At least that's what the editors of his high school yearbook thought.
"It was a fateful three years ago that the "Punk" first crossed the threshold of the High School," wrote the editors of the red-leather edition of "The Whispers," a glossy yearbook chronicling the achievements of the 1954 class of Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA.

The Original 'McNasty'
McCain traveled back to the private school's campus Tuesday.
McCain, who in addition to "Punk" was known as "McNasty" during his high school years.

A minor fact check issue, but the Times should have made it clear that the DNC was referring to his high school nickname.
