Beyond Britney Spears and Paris Hilton: What’s at stake this November
As chatterers and voters track the twists and turns of the 2008 presidential election, the jabs and counter-jabs, the ads and counter-ads, the trips abroad and the accusations at home, the photo-ops and the op-eds, the polls and the maps, the veeps and the vetting, the ground games and the air wars, the press releases, the blind quotes, leaks, media shenanigans, strategy and spin, it’s worth stepping back and looking at the context of this election.

...

In November, we're not only electing a president and reshaping Congress – we’re helping to select a team of advisers, consultants, officials, staffers and stakeholders whose ideology and political philosophy will alter our government. Political candidates are a vehicle for their ideas and interests. And ours.

Eight years under George W. Bush illustrates the point: a worldview was installed with his presidency, conceived and implemented by the public faces (Cheney, Rove, Rice, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft, Wolfowitz, Gonzales, etc.), the silent hands (Addington, Yoo, etc.), and advanced by the ‘reputable enablers’ (Powell, McCain, etc.) and wide swaths of the news media.
