Can a presidential candidate mail money out to people?

This guy was just asking on myspace if anybody received a dollar from John McCain and I responded to the bulletin and asked him why he wanted to know. Well he said he received a letter from the campaign, it was a long letter according to him, but he said it included a dollar and said something like "I trust you and know you're a friend, I give you a dollar and I know you'll send me back 50, 75 or whatever you can." Does that sound right? I live in AZ and get letters from him from time to time but nothing like that.

Also he said his dad bought a few McCain t-shirts, so that was the only donating or anything like that his family has done.

not so sure if it is now. McCain's already breaking campaign finance law, so I don't think he would worry about getting smashed for this, Bush's boys would have to enforce it. It's pretty old school tactic. I think they'll start sending out chain letters next, by Pony Express.
