1. Now that's pretty damn funny
I bet he got a kick out of that. It's just a shame he can't connect with white voters. :sarcasm:

20. In Missouri, their take on redneck
is that it stands for farmer. I know this because I use the term to mean ignorant and racist, and got into trouble for it with a Missourian acquaintance. Did it change my use of the word? No, but at least I know what they mean when they use it. :P

23. Good point - I wondered whether these guys were just farmers...
I've lived in lots of states and the term was used for farmers in at least one of them. Here in PA rednecks will hold up a "Nigger Lover" sign when they see my bumper stickers. (That happened earlier this week, and I'm still feeling sick about it.)

30. Yeah, the same here
and I live one state over in Illinois. I have had some Illinoisans say they were 'rednecks' but they sure weren't farmers. They were those that thought it was cool to have the redneck identity but didn't consider themselves racist. I questioned that, because most people I know here consider the redneck just as you describe them in PA.

41. Any outside laborer can get a redneck and
it's one of those words that can be negative but you just have to own it and make it your own.

That's why this really tickles me!

5. We had a young kid (24?) walk into our Dem office yesterday,
typical towney ranching kid, cowboy hat, t-shirt, Western drawl, and ask if he could get a great big Obama sign put up on his ranch along a busy county road. We about crapped our pants. If THIS kid is voting for Obama, Colorado is in the bag!

22. As I just posted up thread
In Missouri redneck = farmer.

Adding information. The term redneck supposedly came from what the town people called the country people and there are at least two explanations for this. 1) The rough home spun fabric of their shirts rubbed their necks raw. 2) the farmers had sunburned necks from it being exposed while they worked in the fields (hats protected their faces but not their necks) 3) West Virginia coal miners wore red bandannas to identify that they wanted to unionize. 4) A derogatory term for poor working class. (The first two are the ones that I always heard and the last two comes from Wikipedia)

24. That's true anywhere in the South and mid-West
The only people who apply it to racists are Northerners and west-coasters.

32. I would have to disagree.
with you partly because I am a mid-westerner (Illinois) and we are divided on it. Some say they are rednecks here, but they are stereotypical biker types and definitely not farmers. The rest of us see rednecks as racist (not necessarily those that claim the title) and not the kind we want to be associated with.

Before I get flamed, let me say that years ago when I protested at a KKK rally, those that stood with me were what I could describe as looking like "biker types" and I definitely would not have called them rednecks, although they might have called themselves that.
So we are of two camps here in the mid-west. And Chicago is in the mid-west and I doubt that when they call us in the southern part of the state rednecks, they are calling us farmers. ;)

11. If you look closely...
the gentleman holding the sign is missing part of his right arm, which may have made holding that sign (in the rain, no less) more difficult. The smiles on all of these men's faces are just heartwarming.

19. Obama sign
Last week I got into a political conversation with the man who owns the building across the way from My apartment. The talk turned to Obama and He quickly showed His real stripes by calling Obama a name that will not be repeated here. I immediately got on my computer and ordered a 2'x 6' sign that will be placed on my dog kennel that faces his building and parking lot.
WISCONSIN HUNTERS FOR OBAMA

25. That's a wonderful photo!
Gotta love the smiles and body language.

If Obama can win over red state rural farmers like these guys, he's pretty much got it in the bag.

Tough luck FOX News and hate radio jocks, you've lost the battle. Hearts and minds have triumphed over heartless and mindless.
